Noosa Black Marlin On "Aces High"

An eventful day both at the Noosa Bar and offshore on Sunday for "Aces High". Heading towards the bar we saw the coast guard towing an overturned 4m tinny back to base (photo attached) and 4 boats at the bar waiting to cross. I crept up, put on the life jacket and watched a set before making a decision to go for it. I got through OK but unfortunately for the guys that tried to follow me it wasn't so pretty. I turned with the GoPro still filming to see a boat getting smashed by the set that I just got over. Their OB stalled and they were stuck in the death zone. Luckily for them their vessel stayed head on and they managed to get the OB started again before the next big set came through. They turned around and headed back in, we headed out in search of Marlin.

Sunshine Reef was a parking lot and it wasn't long before one of the smaller vessels was onto a small Black. We got some footage and decided to find our own space further north. We picked up some live bait on a good show and deployed two straight away. Mine went out then Adrians. Adrian got smacked within minutes and he was onto a small Black. It put on a good show for the video camera and after a 10-15 minute battle it was in the boat for a quick photo and then safely released. Whilst Adrian was fighting 2 wahoo swam around the boat, we threw everything at them but they weren't on the chew.

We trolled for a bit to try and get them excited with some lures but to no avail. We went back to floating out livies and then Josh got smacked and busted off on the bottom. He quickly re-rigged, deployed another livie and he was on again. Another small black jumped out of the water but then spat the hook. They seemed to go quiet after this. One black was swimming along side the boat teasing us for a while. The wind picked up around 11am so we headed back to the ramp to hear more stories of carnage from the mornings bar incidents.

Have attached some still shots from the video footage.

    Be careful out there guys.
    Cheers
    Dave

The bar was narley all right, we copped a couple over the top, through the clears that we forgot to put down certainley wakes you up.

Those blokes with the turtle boat were standing on a sandbank when we got to the mouth, eskys and crap in the water, saw some blokes doing some crazy things, starting to go out, turn around, get sideways, nearly all in small boats, tinnys some were lucky that day.

Well done on the fish and getting the photos, I think I saw you out there around sunshine and later when we were coming in.

    Cheers

It was standing up really quickly because of the run out, we crept up to it and gunned it through the death zone but still copped one and managed a fair bit of air time in vitamin sea Haines. Got the adrenalin going. Would of been real scary in a 4m tinny. We had to dodge the upturned tinny which was still in the death zone. Saw at least 7 or 8 tinnies turn around and abort mission. Got a nice Spanish for our trouble though.

Amazes me how the tinny brigade try to take on the bar on a dodgy day, then expect Coastguard & fellow boaties to risk themselves & their craft at risk. Accidents do happen unexpectedly, but on a rough day, do yourself & everyone else a favour & drive down to Mooloolaba. Apart from the damage you do to your vessel, I imagine you lose all your fishing gear, wallet, car keys, phone etc. All this just for a fish?? Vessels & gear can be replaced, but lives can't. As death-ship said due to the fast outgoing tide she was standing up, just go out a bit earlier or a bit later to work with the conditions.

Mate check out the video footage on www.fishingnoosa.com.au pretty sure your boat is on it crossing the bar along with old mate that stalled it and the fleet of others trying to cross. She sure was standing up out the back not a day for beginners. Ive spent a lot time crossing that bar with a lot of close calls but luckily never gone over. One valuable lesson my dad taught me was to always respect the Noosa bar even on flat days. watch the bar carefully 5mins 10mins however long it takes you to understand what it is doing and once your committed stay committed never back out half way. If in doubt DONT go out. Congrats on the fish mate awesome photos.
    Cheers Brendan......

The guy on the catamaran is a regular out there, usually with his dog on board. Its very rare that he wont cross the bar, no matter what the conditions. Obviously had engine failure on the way back in.
