    grinners... reason to smile??

A quick question guys.. When your catching grinners does this mean you are in the wrong spot when trying to catch things like snapper and reefies?? I know down south if i pulled in a sergent baker i was in the right spot..
    Cheers in advance,
    Nathan.

You would be fishing in the sand more than likely
    not in the right spot.

considering myself something of a grinner expert i feel i am qualified to comment here.
i would say from experience that when you are catching grinners you are in the right place... for catching grinners. i have caught grinners everywhere over all sorts of bottom and on those rare occasions i venture offshore, well damn it i catch grinners out there too. i have even once caught 2 grinners simultaneously on the 1 hook! my relationship with grinners goes back a long way. i think my 1st encounter i was 12 and trolled one up off a pedal boat at horseshoe bay magnetic island. didn't know what it was and didn't like the look of it neither. the next time i came across them i was trawler deckying up north and we caught loads of them nightly, a lot of them gilled in the net and cod ends. used to have to "pop" them out the net by yanking on the tail end and popping the head off (dragging the guts out too). there are few stenches as vile as a "popped" grinner and the longer they've been dead in the net, the worse it gets. needless to say i was a very diligent deckie and those nets were cleaned asap every morning. these days i move away from them unless just catching for fun. if you are catching a few of them and you are staying there it could be an idea to send 1 back down live just in case something bigger is feeding there too. you never know your luck...

I agree. They are a top fresh bait.

If you are drifting it is usually because you are going over a patch of sand between the reefs.
If you catch them at anchor, you should move and reset the anchor.

Winners are grinners.... I catch plenty maybe even close to the same as netty. I often knock them on the head and into the bucket for my mate. He loves the grinners and when he turns up to see me I often throw a couple out for him to feed on. Its my bird mate from Mud. I'm with Davo, drifting I get a few and have caught some good snapper in the way of cleaning up the grinner population of moreton bay.

I catch them all the time around the bay mostly on sand. They never go back alive they are a pest. Thought about buying a mincer to bolt onto boat

Knock them on the head and use them as bait, they work well for reefies (as said above) and the sand crabs seem to love them as well.
