Back of the hards and beyond...

    Hi ausfishos,

The weather in the SE has been very unpredictable with strong winds and big swell and I haven’t had much of an opportunity to get out.Seeing good reds getting caught up north and marlin getting caught down south has had me chomping at the bit! With a 1.5 m swell and 10-20 knot NE I took a small opportunity to sneak out today.

I arrived at Tin can ramp at 4am and launched the boat my surprise some of the local dolphins were swimming around close by, so I grabbed a slab of mullet and hand fed one and he responded by rolling over and I gave him a quick pat and I was on my way – it was a great start to the day but the best was yet to come.

I pushed out through the fisherman’s gutter and was greeted by a 15-20 NE chop. The plan was the head 80 k to the back of the hards where last trip I found a nice pinnacle. Arriving at the pinnacle I sounded around but there was no fish life their so I moved on. I zig zagged along the shelf another 40 k north sounding until I came up to an area that I have spent sometime sounding on in the past. I had been the northern side in a grid formation and started to sound around on the southern side and within 15 minutes I found a big bombie in the middle of nowhere.

I lined up for the first drift and got smashed and a nice 12kg red came up, followed by a 9.5 kg, a 6.8kg, 4.6 kg and best red going 12.2kg. It was total mayhem, I continued to pull up 65cm reds and I let a total of10 go back! I went back to the back side of the bombie and pulled up 2 more 10kg reds and let them go too as I had my bag. I arrived back at the ramp at11.30 am, had the boat washed by 12.30, rang the misses and she and the boys came down for a swim. It was a great red session and one that I won’t forget.

Mick I’ve got a mark for you, I’ll ring you.

    Steve

Hi Redhunter first of all that"s a impressive bag limit. Secondly i once lived up there and
i thought i let you know under no circumstances are you allowed to touch the dolphins.
Mate there"s laws in place not to touch the dolphins at all in case of disease, those dolphins
are part of a pod who are hand feed all the time at the ramp by volunteers and tourists.
I know it"s not easy but rules are rules. cheers manta man

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Up here we Use Hussar as baits for real RED FISHS (SHSIIFDER)

    Hi Steve,

Great haul there mate. It's always satisfying to find an isolated rock that produces after hours of sounding. Well done.

    Cheers Carry

Great read mate , well written . Nice catch . But remember! don't do 65 in a 60 zone, dont do cashies the goverment can't tax it, dont do illegal U-turns , don't ride a pushie without a helmet, but most of all NEVER EVER EVER TOUCH DOLPHINS.

Re: Back of the hards and beyond...

So why is it ok for "volunteers and tourists" to hand feed the dolphins and not redhunter?!

World has gone mad, pull your head in..
