Hi ausfishos,
The weather in the SE has been very unpredictable with strong winds and big swell and I haven’t had much of an opportunity to get out.Seeing good reds getting caught up north and marlin getting caught down south has had me chomping at the bit! With a 1.5 m swell and 10-20 knot NE I took a small opportunity to sneak out today.
I arrived at Tin can ramp at 4am and launched the boat my surprise some of the local dolphins were swimming around close by, so I grabbed a slab of mullet and hand fed one and he responded by rolling over and I gave him a quick pat and I was on my way – it was a great start to the day but the best was yet to come.
I pushed out through the fisherman’s gutter and was greeted by a 15-20 NE chop. The plan was the head 80 k to the back of the hards where last trip I found a nice pinnacle. Arriving at the pinnacle I sounded around but there was no fish life their so I moved on. I zig zagged along the shelf another 40 k north sounding until I came up to an area that I have spent sometime sounding on in the past. I had been the northern side in a grid formation and started to sound around on the southern side and within 15 minutes I found a big bombie in the middle of nowhere.
I lined up for the first drift and got smashed and a nice 12kg red came up, followed by a 9.5 kg, a 6.8kg, 4.6 kg and best red going 12.2kg. It was total mayhem, I continued to pull up 65cm reds and I let a total of10 go back! I went back to the back side of the bombie and pulled up 2 more 10kg reds and let them go too as I had my bag. I arrived back at the ramp at11.30 am, had the boat washed by 12.30, rang the misses and she and the boys came down for a swim. It was a great red session and one that I won’t forget.
Mick I’ve got a mark for you, I’ll ring you.
