90HP direct injected oil costs over a year.

I starting to look at a new engine for my old Fisher 480. I'm looking at the motors like the Mercury Optimax 90HP or Tohatsu TLDI 90HP. I was wondering what guys usually pay in oil costs over the year. Basically will I pay more in oil and less at service time and end up with similar costs to a 4 stroke.

Have an opti 90 got 25 hrs on it so far and it's still on the first 4l of oil ( and thats with double oil in the first 10 hrs) Cost about $50 for 4l so probably about $ 150 for a hundred hrs which would be a couple of oil changes in a four stroke so the oil cost is probably still higher that a four stroke but not by much. Horses for courses, I ve had both and could go either way, the Opti has a shitload of grunt for a 90Hp I recon she must be flogging every one of em when you give her a boot full.

I had the TLDI 90 on my last boat. Great motor, very easy on oil. Incredibly fuel efficient engines.

Their recommended oil at thetime was Valvoline TCW3 so It was cheap as chips to boot. Not sure if they recommend something differen these days or not. It was certainly far cheaper than the Opti oil.

I never took much notice but I rarely went thru more than a couple of 5 litre bottles each year, averaged 100 hrs a year. At about $25 a bottle it wasn't anything to worry about.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 60HP 4 stroke Yammy and it has been excellent. The other two engines I'm interested in are the 80HP Suzuki and the F70 Yamaha. I'm not convinced that a stretched out 60HP is much of an upgrade.

    Hi Davo

Add the new 90 Suzuki to the list. Same block as the 80 and same weight, or so close to be almost identical.

Drop up and have a talk to Jon Eadie Bayside Suzuki at Cleveland, just behind Bob Jane T marts. He can probably also get you the Tohatsu.

Not sure there is much price difference between the Zuke and Toey, they are both great motors but I would give the Suzuki the edge for quietness, smoothness and probably resale value. But I would be happy to have another Toey as well. Jon can service both of them for you and comes highly recommended.

    Cheers
