New tinny options...

Looking round for a tinny for the bay and local estuarys crabbing with the kids etc..

Was searching second hand but found most guys asking for close to or more than a new one (Yes some have a few extras but a 200 dollar sounder and a hundred dollar bimini on a 5yr old coke can with a heap of hours and a rusty trailer doesn't justify the increase in price over new! maybe a few forced wife sales going on )

Anyway.. I have looked at a few new ones and looking at these all around the 8k mark with basic safety gear and option to go a 40hp for a bit more coin, maybe considering the tohatsu or merc 40hp upgrade if it's recommended by those in the know -

I'm liking the Clark as a few reports on here praise them and i'm not a fan of the Aluvan quality regardless of how good it rides with the new hull design as the new one I looked at seemed to be welded together by a 1 armed 12yr old chinese kid with parkinsons .

Any others I should be looking at in that sorta price range? Any ones I should avoid like the plague?

I spec'ed it up a little with a 3cyl 40hp Yamaha, inside led lighting and 12v cigarette lighter connection, outboard battery charge kit plus every option you see on their list here for $10,240. You can ask if they'd do it for the same price as I only took delivery of it two months ago.

I am in the Redlands too if you want to take a look.

PS I agree, there are many people asking new boat prices for their five-year-old tinny. The GFC etc has really driven the price of boats down across the board. The price you're paying for a tinny now is the same as eight or so years ago.

I'm somewhat surprised you found the Aluvan quality to be of issue, I've just picked my self up a 4.3 and compared to the other more known brands in the yard i also looked at (stacer/quinnie/horizon) I found the aluvan to top em. Being a stainless welder I was being particulary picky, but i cant fault the work on my boat (yes there are a few welds that look (colder) but with the larger peices of alloy that are being welded to that makes sense.. I didn't see a 4.0m in the yard, if that's what you were looking at? If you ask me I'd have to say the std options and the overall toughness of the boat is worth the dosh not to mention the ride, i've done two trips to moreton and would have to say i feel better in it than my old 5.0 stessl from a few years back. Each to their own I suppose, have you settled on anything yet??

stessco and seajay are very big boats for there size in that range. and the 3 cyl 40 mercs are a great motor i had one on my first bluefin 4.75 viking alot would say underpowered but it pushed the boat along great.

Having owned a Stressco for a while I would steer away from them if I were to go for an alloy boat again... the welds in mine left a little be desired and the aluminium was starting to show a bit of stress on it from general use.... mine was a bigger option than what you are looking at but they all come under the same quality control so for mine I would give them a wide berth.

I used to have a 3.9 Stessl which never looked like letting me down (1980's vintage though) and a 4.5 Seajay which was built pretty tough for what it was also (1997 model) ... I would happily look at either of these brands again as I was happy with both boats at the time.

agree mate. I was very impressed with the welds on an aluvan. seem to be quite heavy duty and quite neat. To me their build quality is a grade better than the usual suspects.
