Truth is that the blokes haggling about the science behind the cause of the corrosion ####ed up the topic to the degree that you are now left lost.

It doesn't matter jack shit what is going on, like cancer you have just got to get rid of it or it will eat you out from int inside.

Best clean, sand back to bare metal (don't be shy on this bit), prime and top coat. The re-intall fasteners with duralec. If the fasteners are self tapping, then get rid of them where possible and go back to screw and lock-nut.

Thanks Darren as soon as I get boat back I will check out, duralac seems to be the best way to go after sanding back damaged area and repainting.

this. I just like to correct stuff if I see something wrong. But I have learned to say my part and just move along these days. Cant be arsed getting into the old boot type arguments anymore! Plus I often have to refer back to my uni books now for stuff when people get technical, and I just cant be bothered anymore.

Point is, if its above the waterline, remove the screws and replace using duralac. I have been using that stuff on yacht masts for ever and it works a treat. Keep a few rags handy though, cause the stuff is messy. There is some new stuff kicking around now, think its called tefgel or something like that. I cant vouch for it though, never used it.
