Luckily cobiaman was prepared and had navionics on his phone, otherwise there would have been certain failure!
Was out in the bay today and let Cobiaman drive the boat for about a second and what do you know......as soon as he takes over, my Garmin 4010 GPS looses satellites.I turned it off and then back on and it picked up satellites again for about a second or two and lost them all again.I drove around for about another 2 hours and it never picked us up again. While this was all happening my Garmin VHF200 kept coming up with a low volts message and kept turning itself off as I pushed the PTT button. My Furuno sounder never came up with a low volts alarm though and that is usually the one that lets me know first.
All very strange......does anyone have any ideas?

a mix between cobiaman and gremlins by the sound of it
Not sure Anthony. The Furunos are pretty power hungry and normally let you know when they are not getting full voltage. I would check your circuits and meter them to make sure

Check your fuses and any joins in the power supply for corrosion.
You could just have a bung garmin like my 298s, it has progressively gotten worse over the last 12 months and is now at the stage where it wjll rarely pick up satellites on its own. Whenever it drops out i have to turn it off and on, when it comes back online i have to select the option of initialize position and acquire satellites and it is all good after that.
I bought a 2nd garmin that i mounted on the dash as a back up and am slowly transferring all my marks across as I check them out.
Muddy,
do you have an external antenna for the unit or only an internal?
Is your radio wired to your GPS for DSC function? did you test it with the radio turned off?
- if you have an external check the connections to the back of the unit, disconnect and use the internal.
- if you have an internal then I would be looking to find an external antenna to hook it up to, to test it with.
Low volts on your radio may just be a connection issue. your Garmin GPS should have an overlay to allow you to display battery voltage as well.
Also you might want to consider if anything could be obstructing the signal or interferring with it, Have you changed the position of the unit or could it have moved in the dash, or changes to the roof or windscreen etc?

Thanks for taking the time to have a think and type that out for me Chris/Dave
I'll give all that a go when I'm back in a month.I'm just hoping it's nothing too major and just by going what you've said I get the feeling again it might all come down to the things I'VE touched and played with.
When will I learn?
