good fish, well done. I don't like it's chances after being gaffed in the throat.

Just as well it headed back to the beach or you could still be on your way back from Tahiti. Awesome results.

I agree that it may look a bit bad, but fish don't have throats there. The gaff was nowhere near the gills nor the guts. There was no blood at all and the fish was not dragged out of the water to avoid any unnecessary strain. I needed to gaff/control the fish so i could take out the hook out from the side of its jaw in some pretty ordinary conditions. It is the best i could do at the time and i think that the fish will be fine, but we will never know i guess. Most of the GT's you see caught and released on TV are treated much worse than mine. He will have a sore chin for sure, but his backbone would be fine.

oh, sounds like you did a pretty good job under the circumstances! no blood would definitely be a good sign. he looks like a tough fish, so hopefully ok!

I reckon about 3km. He went north first then turned around and headed south with the wind.

Great effort to keep calm for 3 km, most of us would have given in to temptation and tightened the drag.

    cheers

Great fish, and great work on the release! Caught one half that size on 50 pound braid last week which fought like a freight train in a 4.5m tinny let alone a Yak!!!
