    Launching at Moreton

Ok so am taking first trip with the fam and some friends to Moreton soon and want to take the boat over to take advantage of the fishing on offer. I have a 4.1 dory with a tilt trailer and am wondering if launching and retrieving at Moreton is doable, worth the extra money on the barge and if so where is the best place to try and launch. From what I have read around the wrecks sounds like a plan but have never beach launched before....

Also, we are staying in a house at cowan so close by would be good. Have to book a barge soon to get over so advice would be taken on board and appreciated from those who have the experience.....cheers

p.s. Taking the boat over separate is not an option, its either worth launching or not????

Its definetly worth taking the boat as long as it is not too much westerly in the wind. If it is mostly SE to NE you are fairly well protected around the Cowan area and you can pretty much drop the boat on the beach at low tide with the stern anchored to sea and just climb in when there is a bit more water.

If you have a helper it shouldn't be to difficult to drop your boat just above the water line at any tide and just spin the nose into the water (we have done it this way a few times).

Tangalooma is a good place to launch from if there is any waves breaking on the beach as it does drop off quite quickly and you do have that protection.

Mate easy as pretty much the whole way along. You can launch right in front of Cowan and geenerally at this time of year it is flat every day on the inside. There is good fishing to be had right out in front of Cowan especially at night. We use yakka heads and a pee sinker and just drift around just on the drop off. Big snapper and big cod are the usual suspects.

Just be careful if you leave it anchored overnight - things can go missing overnight if the boat is unattended - also if you leave it anchored overnight then you should have a second very long line tied to the stern just in case your main anchor line goes then you have the "insurance" of a second line - I have seen boats lost at North West Island (off Gladstone) with only one anchor line. If a strong south westerly blows up (unlikely at this time of year) you might have to anchor in the lee of the wrecks.
