Deciding on a prop for my 40hp

Hi all,

I have an 02 Merc 40hp 2 stroke (US model 3cyl). Current prop got a little chunked on a rock bar today, so I'm going to replace it.. I was going to replace it any way as she was fairly well worn.

I have no tachometer, so I can't report the revs... Currently get excellent hole shot even when loaded 4 up with gear. Top speed solo is about 50km/h, top speed with 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids is still around the 46km/h mark last I checked.

Current prop is 10.75" x 12p.

I'm conflicted as to what prop to choose.. Pic of boat below. Mercury online prop selector suggects anything from 16-17p yet I've been told by retailers 12p and mechanic s 13p.

Anyone else have a 4.1-4.3m tinnie with a bit of weight (I have full floors/decks and a 93kg donk) and a 40hp on the back? What prop are you using? What is your top speed 1 up VS more weight?

This is her, though she now has a deep cycle under the front casting deck and a bow mount electric on there.

sounds to me the one you have is a good all rounder i would put the same back on personally

firstly, you can buy for about 60 bucks, an hour/tach meter which measures revs while running, then when engine's off, shows run time elapsed. it's less than the size of a matchbox and you can velcro it on to your tiller. very popular on dirt bikes. then work out what prop you need/want

should be getting more out of it... i have a 07 4.5m brooker safari 40hp jap mercury with solas s/steel prop ...full floors...side console...twin 100 amp hour batterys ...im 110kgs and with a mate and my boy we get 58kph flat out...cruises on 40 to 45 kph ...10ltrs gets me around 30/35ks cruising ...
ring the solas guys they will tell you the right size and they have a swapover if its not right...

Just ordered a cheapie tachometer.. will see how accurate it is via the car before using it on the outboard.

I figure I'm probably hitting the rev limiter.. Have contacted Solas for prop advice, but I won't be buying from them. Can't justify twice the price to buy local versus overseas. My loyalty is to my own wallet first. - As much as the swap over service would be nice.

hey matt i have a ss/prop from solas 2002 50hp merc its 12p on my 4.45 quintrex i get about same speed as you do. my original alloy prop was 12p to
and steve at solas said a 12p was best for mine good luck with it i only have a half floor in mine with no side decks to so its pretty light to light lol mines hits the rev limiter at wot when on my own but fine when more weight in it .

Have a yam 4 stroke 40 on a 4.6 brooker and using a solas 12p s/s no issues

We have a pretty heavy 4.2m TABS bullshark, full floors, 40 hp 2 stroke yammy, electric, deep cycle battery, live well, side console, etc & always carry too much tackle (just in case)...we get a top speed of about 50 kph 2 up with our 11 5/8 x 11 pitch prop, the revs peak where they should (mid 5000s).
