Urgent help needed! how to convert GPS marks?

I have been given 4 GPS waypoints to try and fish tomorrow but trouble is the waypoints are from a Lowrance using a navionics card and my GPS is a Garmin using their bluemap or whatever they sell. The trouble is on the E coordinate his marks go over 60 after the 147 or whatever but mine can't (as underlined). Anyway, I'm going to post a bogus similar mark and if someone can help show me how to convert, that would be awesome!

    ie: S 19 20 435, E 147 62 435

As Fed said, those data set are wrong. those numbers only go to 60......( 60 minutes ) then a new set starts.

If the second set is 147. 52 . 435 that puts you about 17k's west of the reef system.

IT is 82k's north west of Bowen or 116 from Townsville or....if you are heading out from Ayr or Homehill, it is 41k's from the mouth of the river.

    1. The assumption the coordinates are invalid could be right. Then again could be wrong depending on how the person providing the mark interpreted / wrote down the format and also has the person receiving the mark interpreted what was written down.

    2. Written like this S 19 20 435, E 147 62 435 and assuming one logical interpretation could be S 19° 20.435', E 147° 62.435' then yes the longitude is invalid and either an error in reading/interpreting and/or transciption error?

    3. Another logical interpretation is the coordinates were written down like this based on a decimal degrees format? It is possible S 19 20 435, E 147 62 435 as written down could have originally started life as S 19.20435°, E 147. 62435°. Might not be the most logical but at this stage without further details can not be ruled out at this point.

    4. S 19 20 435, E 147 62 435 as written has very little meaning without those magical little symbols (° , ' , ") that would totally eliminate any confusion, assumptions or misunderstanding

Diver Dan is it possible that the coordinate is actually 147.62435 and you have put the space in, which would convert to 147 37.461 or 147 degrees 37 minutes 27 seconds, if so then you have Decimal Degrees. Try this site http://www.csgnetwork.com/gpscoordconv.html

thanks for the info guys, the bloke gave me the marks over the phone and I'm guessing they are in decimal degrees. I'll contact him again tonight. Shame I didnt get to try the spots on the Saturday!
