Thread: Not going topless any more, maybe.

    Not going topless any more, maybe.

    The Quinny is inching towards being finished and is now at the marine trimmers for a full makeover and bimini, rear sun awning off the bimini and clears etc. Bimini/sun awning can be folded and removed.

    In regards to the bimini the trimmer said he typically sets up up the top of the bimini 6 foot from the floor, or lower, depending on the use and look wanted. Problem is I am 6' 1" in the old money.

    He said he can obviously go higher but being a small boat (5 mtr) with a highish floor the bimini will look quite high. I've scoured the net and agree that smaller boats can look a little "top heavy" with high biminis

    I realise this is personal preference however as this is the first small boat I've owned, what are your thoughts on the bimini:

    1. setup for full head height plus clearance for my noggin; or
    2. setup up lower;
    3. become a dwarf ;
    4. go topless.

    I guess I'm asking those of you who have lower biminis' - are they a pain in the a$$ and have you wished you'd gone taller?

    Will be sitting down most of the time and I can probably fold back or remove for fishing days, or at least remove the rear awning when fishing out the back.

    Opinions?

    Attached link to the look I'm after - see right column 7th boat down - the red Quinny. The one below that looks OK too with a higher bimini setup.

    I'm leaning your way Tracker - and your feedback is the sort of justification I'm after. Ultimately I want to use the bimini to get my $$$ wort out of it rather than curse it or remove it all the time.

    Whats a few more inches anyway

    How tall are you so I can get an idea of clearance.

    Mate, I faced a similar dilemma with the hardtop on my Surtees. I'm 6'6 in the old money, standard roof height is 6'2. So got em to raise the roof for me. I don't care if it might look a little strange to others, it's my damn boat, it needs to suit me, not anyone else!

    Recommend you adopt the same approach!

    Cheers

    Hi would go for height I had a 525 tinnie with a full walk under biminie it was a pleasure to use apart from the ride and my mate has a ski boat with a low biminie might look cool but gee its a pain to move around on forever banging your head.

    All good responses.... whats the general consensus for typical height....6'2" to 6'3" ?

    Does the height of something like this interest you? I'm not sure of the exact height from the floor to the inside of the Bimini.

    I'm 5'11 and my head is well clear of hitting any extrusions.

    another reason for going higher on mine was ,its a center console and has rod rack on side of console.A bit of extra height allows a better range of rods.

    If your 6' 1'' I would go at least 6' 3'' so you can a hat or thongs would be nothing worse than it being just too low

    That looks fine by me Little Skipper. However, your windsreen is raised whereas my screen is level with the gunwale height. Accordingly, the height of the bimini is exacerbated by the lower screen on mine.

    Do you reckon you could measure and let me know of the height of yours from the floor?

    I don't have fold down bimini as such but I recommend the height I have good head clearance for 6'6" person so it is a little high that is how I like it.

    Our previous boat ws a quinny bowrider with factory top, fantastic for towing the kids when seated driving on the lake, and a right pain any other time. Ended up extending the legs, clears didnt fit but we could stand up. If you need shelter when fishing go for the height, if you stand to drive go for the height. Sold it to a mate and fished with him recently, he took it back to standard, and I ended up standing down the back. The new boat has a hardtop, only just high enough at 6' 3" but so much easier. Make it work for you, and if you are vertically challenged, get your tallest mate to model for you.

    Nah, if, like me, you are adequately heighted then you will probably enjoy your taller mates banging their noggin and stooping around.
