Why cant the speakers just plug straight into the earphone plug?

They can... if they have a built in amplifier. Many types available.

The other question I have about using iPad on boats, especially for navigation type apps, is whether they are going to be up to the pounding that our marine electronics cop on a rough day.

On a yacht, maybe they might be OK, but on a 5-6m powerboat I reckon they might have a pretty short lifespan in that harsh environment.

Anybody got any experience that supports that theory or suggests otherwise?

Take a little bit of care and it will be fine. Get a good mount and cover for it. I have a heavy duty shock cover on mine, and mounted in a ram mount. It cops a splash occassionaly in rough weather, take it out of the cover after use to insepct it and no issues yet. My tablet has been through far worse than what I put it through on the boat, very robust, in fact it is split open now and has been for some time. I have no issue getting a new one but am curious as to how long this one will last....I dont have an ipad, it's an asus tab, it has its shortfalls in other areas, but it sure can take a beating and salty weather
