Thread: Solas props from overseas

    Question Solas props from overseas

Hit something in the shipping channel last week, and wrote off the prop.

    2007 140hp Suzuki, prop is 14 x 21", original.

    Decided to go for Stainless.

Solas 14 x 21" HR Titan 3 blade, from Solas website (distributor), $650 plus postage.

    From Iboats.com (USA) $310.40 + $79.40 postage, total $398.80.

Guess where I bought it from.

    Same prop, what's going on.

Ok, no warranty, but on a prop?

No service, but on a prop?

No friendly advice, but on a prop?

    Dave.

I did the same thing when I was looking for props for my suzi. I'm spinning a merc trophy plus which was roughly $1000 over here, took a gamble on evilbay and was delivered in 10 days all up for $450.

Be interested to see if there's any diff in your figures going from Ali to stainless - did you ever have the Ali prop checked for pitch?

    Cheers Ryan

Could not agree more Dave, why would you purchase a Solas any other way.

Figures just don't stack up for the local purchase. Should have purchased two and resold one on flea bay to make yours even cheaper again.

I would have purchased overseas but I have a different custom sort of boat so can't ask what everyone is running on same make boats so I went the Australian way so I can make sure I get it propped correctly. Solas will exchange or modify until you are happy and they are happy with the props performance as part of their price

still waiting on my gearbox replacement from the 1770 M&G reef incident so I can try this shiny bit of bling

No, Ryan, I just assumed that, the prop being a genuine Suzuki, would be spot on. I do have a lot of faith in Japanese manufacturers, but then, who knows where the genuine Suzuki props are made.

I will put up some figures re speed and fuel economy when I get out again.

With the Ally, economy one up was about 2.5 kilometres per litre, and with two on board, about 2.2.

Speed pretty well matched revs, ie, 4000 rpm's, 40 kmh, etc.

I am under the impression Solas is the OE supplier/manufactuer to Suzuki on props.

    Re: Solas props from overseas

    Hi Guys
If your after a simple prop when you know your exact pitch and cup shape requirements Solas OS would be fine
    however
If your looking for a custom prop setup then Steve at Solas in Australia will go out of his way to help.
I had pair 250 verados with poor performance which was due to props (not just pitch but more importantly cup shape). Steve let me take 3 sets of props to try over a 8 week period to trial and find the set I was most happy with.
After six months upgraded the motors and Steve allowed me for $100 to change the props again to suit new motors after they had done over 100 hours use.
    That is excellent service.
    cheers

Agree 100% with all said about whether you need the extra service or not.

My boat having the 175 Suz is standard Solas propped in factory - so a replacement would be cheapest and best OS in my case.

I did OS import with trim tabs too - a few hundred saved

    Re: Solas props from overseas

I bought my last couple of props from Local Solas. Being trial and error to achieve the best performance and with the generous assistance from Sean and Steve from Solas Aus I couldn't ask for better service and I am sure that in my case it was a much cheaper exercise to buy local.
Anyone contemplating buying a prop should at least contact the guys at Solas and get a quoted price for your prop of choice. I have found that their prices are not double as some have stated but in reality more like about 40% which is fair enough with the backup service and warranty you get.
If you have already done all the prop testing or don't care that you may not be getting the optimum performance and just replacing a damaged prop to the same spec well I agree that you may save a few $$ by supporting the US economy instead of ours.
I don't work for Solas and I don't have a cushy Govt job but I work for a small local business like Solas who depends on local customer support in return for our product support and advice. I and many Aus workers depend on this relationship to put a roof over and provide for our family, enjoy the lifestyle we have in this country and I am glad that there are still people out there who value and support local businesses.

    JC

Agree with nice to support local however a few weeks back i purchased a Titan 3 from the states.

$655.00 list here $308.00 over there plus 70.00 shipping, here in a week and a half.

Not to mention there is one more step in the distribution over there.

I am sure they are a nice bunch at Solas Aust but gee whiz i am not paying for someone elses holiday house.
