Finish rebuild or part out old Johnson 200??

    Hi folks,

A while ago I made the stupid decision of buying a '77 200HP Johnson with low compression on 1 cylinder, with the intension of an easy rebuild. Cost $500.

So I stripped it down, and found 1 scorched piston and bore. No problem. Got the block bored 10 thou and honed, another $500. Bought a rebuild kit with new pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets & seals, thermostat overhaul bits and some other odds and ends like screws, rubber gromets, and new cowling seal. Cost about $1000.

So some months have passed, and i've now completely lost interest in this rebuild. And I'm looking at going inboard for my next boat.

So what to do? And how can I get most of my money back? Try sell everything together, in the hope that someone might like to re-assemble? Or part it out individually? I could put it back together myself and try sell it in running order, but I know you don't get much for backyard rebuild jobs. I don't really have time right now anyway as I'm renovating my house. If I did try selll it all together, what would be a reasonable asking price? I realise I'm not going to get all my money back, but maybe half? I can't imagine there'd be much demand for parts for something this old either, if I did decide to part it out seperately.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I reckon the chances of getting good money for an "old" carby model 200 will be pretty slim at best, even if it is running well! best to ebay the lot, either in bits or as a bucket of parts and hope for the best.

    Hi WayneG,
The worst part is that the whole thing other than parts is 35yrs old, and dont get me wrong mate but why would you spend $2000 on a old motor..
I think at most you may get some of your $$ back from the parts, or you could call a outboard wreckers and see what they will offer you, but dont hold your breath with them..
i would try to seel it as a whole unit with the parts and see what sort of offers you get...
At most you may only get the $$$ back to cover parts if your lucky, the big thing is... is anyone looking for that type of motor and what are they willing to pay for one..

Thanks guys. I really don't know what I was thinking actually. The other thought I had, is to finish it off, find a cheap hull with no motor, and sell as a running package.

But first I think i'll put the whole lot on ebay and see what sort of interest I get.
