    Post Battery CCA

    I am looking to replace my batteries, I have a duel battery set up for a Honda 75 hp. The current batteries are of two different CCA, 650 and 585. Can anyone point me in the right dirrection on what CCA will be adequate for this motor. Any advise appreciated.

    I am using twin 550CCA Calcium batteries in my boat for my 75HP Mercury, I've had them for 2.5 years now and never missed a beat....YET!

    It will, to an extent, depend on what accessories you will be running from your "house" battery, and how often you do things like overnighters, and what kind of lights you have. Also how often and for how long you run things like live bait pumps and stereos.

    Obviously the more such gear you run off the HB, and the more time using them, the greater cca rating you would want to have.

    Your owners manual will tell you the required cca rating for the startin battery.

    So, give us a bit more info and then people will be able to advise you from a more informed position.

    The CCA rating (Cold Cranking Amps) is a measure of the maximum amperage the battery can put out for a very short period of time. For a house battery you need to be more concerned with the AH (Amp Hour) rating as that will give an idea of how long the battery can last under a more moderate sustained amp draw.

    From memory things like falcons etc run a 550cca battery so I would think its overkill for your starting application for your house battery work out what the current consumption of your accessories is and how long you need it to supply that for and you will have have your AH rating.
    So a 100AH rating will supply 100 amps for 1 hour, 50 amps for 2 hours, 25 amps for 4 hours and so on.

    Just had a look at the operators guide for my 90 etec and it says a minimun 640CCA battery is required for this motor. So I would think a 600CCA or higher battery would be perfect for your 75 honda.

    Your minimum specs will be dictated by your manual or Spaniard King (Garry).
    Your maximum specs will be dictated by battery weight and your wallet.

    Marto, with respect, you can't draw the conclusion that a etec and a Honda require the same capacity starting battery. Completely different motors, one hi-tec 2 stroke and one a 4 stroke. You might get lucky and find they are the same, but it is by no means guaranteed.

    For example, my previous boat had a Tohatsu TLDI 90 and they need a very high cca battery, and the Optimax are similar. Far in excess of the normal 2 stroke or 4 stroke requirement.

    The OP has asked for info on both starting and house batteries in a dual setup. Can't properly answer his question, especially re the house battery, until he outlines his setup of electricals and his intended use of them. Otherwise everyone is guessing. For all we know he might run portable fridges etc and that will change everything.

    The only electrical i will be running is nav lights, bilge pump, sounder and live bait tank. Only the basics and the bait tank not all that often.

    How old are your existing batteries you are replacing. If you got a good run out of them why not get the same again as that would be the best evidence of the CCA and amp hours you need?

    G'day Renny,mate leave comparisons out of the equation.Go by what your handbook recommends for the starting CCA and go upwards from there depending on your setup and current draw.Keeping in mind Batteries in parrallel are added together to reveal their CCA and Ah,but if switched to isolate each other revert back to their respective rating.
    What I mean by a comparison, ,my Prado 3.4ltr V6 takes a 550 CCA whereas my 2.5ltr Opti 135hp takes a 750CCA,worlds apart.Jim

    Fit the biggest one you can get in the space available. I had a 1000cca Cat battery hanging off my old Merc 90 two stroke - it nearly had more horsepower than the engine! It spun her over super quick and it would start like a DI two stroke. There is no substitute for cca's in a starting application if you ask me.
