Breaksea Spit - Roonies Point Advice

    Hi all,

Just after some advice regarding the breaksea spit/roonies point area...........Two boats heading up tomorrow to fish Thurs arvo, Friday, coming home Sat or Sun.

We will be taking more than enough fuel so capacity shouldn't be an issue, and we won't be crossing the spit unless the conditions are ideal.

I've read all the posts I can find, but just interested to see if there is anybody who lives up there that I could make a 5 - 10 minute phone call to for a quick chat, or there is some REALLY important things I've missed.

Not interested in gps marks or fishing spots, I've got that side covered and prefer finding my own marks anyway.

    Thanks in advance

    Brett

What are you doing? Spearing or fishing? Trolling or bottom fishing? Are you trying to cross Breaksea to fish outside? If you have SEers you are going to want to be up under the Sandy Cape light but you will get a roll coming through there. Was told a good thing last time I camped there in a big boat, deploy your sea anchor out the back and it will keep your nose into the current and stiffen you up. Made it a lot more comfortable. If it is northerlies, you will want to be just east of Rooneys in Platypus Bay.

    Thanks smithy,

We plan on mainly bottom bashing, using sp's and do a small amount of trolling.
If we can cross the spit that would be fantastic, but isn't a must.

I will have the spearing gear with me, just in case I get keen.
If the forecast holds up it should be SE on the way up, then go E Thursday arvo, Friday will hopefully be variable, then NE light in the arvo. Probably head home sat arvo with a NE wind.

PS. I think I accidentally clicked 'dislike' on your post. Completely unintentional, bloody iPhone.

Thanks very much for the advice.

Went up there a few years back with Time And Tide Charters. We did go outside but there was a decent swell there and we didn't stay there too long. In the short time we were there, the fishing was great and I can remember coming back inside and trolling around reefs inside the bar. We caught a few good size Cobias, from memory eight or nine in total using CD18 lures. You'll have a good time there though.

Was up there last week.Smithy was on the only other boat up there fishing. If you have time and light trolling gear, troll some small marlin lures around Rooneys Point itself.Plenty of little blacks there. We saw 5 in an hour last Sunday. If weather is right you can also try 2 miles south of the 13 mile crossing on the outside.Kamikaze tagged 60 odd blacks in 3 days there 2 weeks ago.

How do you tag 60 blacks in 2 weeks, what a blast it must have been on that boat.

three days, tropic, not 2 weeks.they were getting 20 a day with plenty of double and triple hookups.we got a of big sail around 50kg and lost one the same size in that area.best to sit on the bait and deep drop livies.

Yep they found the fish at 10:30 Tuesday morning and went on to get 14 for the day. They anchored on the spot and didn't travel in to Rooneys so they had a good head start on them the next day and got 27. They hung outside again the next day for a rolly night at anchor and got 26 then ran home to Mooloolaba. They had two massive fuel bladders on the deck but by chuggging up the first night at 10knots they saved heaps of diesel and had heaps spare when they got back.
