Don't know how much time you have spent around the courts but there is a million reasons why people plead guilty and it isn't because they are guilty let alone a case against a govt dept. I don't know anyone involved with this but I know a few pro's and they aren't rocket scientists and know the rules but still do a lot of things in a common sense way. Sometimes common sense isn't technically correct. I'm actually surprised with a grey nurse that the uni or researchers wouldn't have jumped at the chance to have a fresh caracss assuming it was already dead.

    Re: Caught with Illegal Catch

I was fishing for bream under the trawlers moored near Sea World and this old guy on board 1 trawler was teaching 3 young guys what to do if inspected by Fisheries inspectors and how to hide things crabs I think. Hopefuly just a bad egg but pretty poor realy.

    Re: Caught with Illegal Catch

    OK
this morning i asked a former fellow professional trawler owner/skipper who it was that had the g/n on the the deck.
when he told me who it was there was no surprise.
but i saying that i'm told it was a case of " it is dead we will get rid of it later" situation.
i've no idea where this all happened but obviously in close somewhere around here YAMBA i'd assume.

i;m quite certain that there was no intent other than a huge oversight on his part who is also a owner /skipper
    i'm sure he wont forget

Id say he pled guilty because it was the cheaper option.

    Re: Caught with Illegal Catch

On the local ABC Radio - Rural Report this week, the Fisheries spokesman from Coffs Harbour stated that the Trawler Skipper said he hadn't returned the (dead) shark to the water because he didn't want it washing up on the local beach. So, the skipper was guilty but probably trying to do what he thought was the right thing by getting rid of the carcas somewhere where it wouldn't cause a stink.

    Re: Caught with Illegal Catch

One day I hope they find a safer way of harvesting prawns so there doesn't have to be such carnage of other marine life. Very sad all these things are dying just for prawns and regardless whether he kept it on board or not he killed it.

They could all have excluders fitted at a cost and that would help in some cases but the greens dont in any way support funding etc etc .

getting some press local papers and national as well.

As for anyone who fins a fish I think the least that should be done to them is the same

i suppose you have not released a fish for the GLORY OF I RELEASED IT knowing full well it was gunna DIE.
I DONT KNOW WHERE YOUR FROM because you seem to be to afraid to put on your avatar where you hail from.
but for my money you are a sensationalist in full flight.

I AGREE WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING sorry caps basically.
but until you know how a trawl net is constructed for this purpose i think that most people on this forum with a few exceptions would have little knowledge of commercial trawl gear.
they have turtle excluders in QLD trawl gear but if something big becomes jammed in it it is useless.
as for the other links there was no mention of this shark having been finned.

    Re: Caught with Illegal Catch

Yeah sorry Gabba, you are pretty much right, I do try and fish conservatively, perhaps not so all my life as you correctly point out, but some of us learn and some just keep doing the same ol' unfortunately. I don't know this pro fisherman whatsoever and I doubt that it was just a one off mistake, I have been out there, I know what happens, you do too. Getting caught in the act is more likely bad luck or bad timing.
Last fishing trip had 4 legal snapper in the box, bag limit, thought I would try and target something else so just set my line while having a bite to eat and clean down the boat ready for home. Hooked up a good size Snapper much bigger than the rest but yeah I released it alright, alive and fighting fit she rocketed away to the depths and I was happy about it.
I was surprised that you seemed to take exception to my comments re the Grey Nurse, it is tragic that this is still going on.
Don't think it is fair to compare someone like me a fine whether rec fisherman who goes fishing once a month with one hook one line, catching a hand full of legally caught fish, to people who are catching and measuring marine carnage by the tonnes.
I don't doubt that a lifetime of pro trawling may perhaps desensitise ones attitude towards the cost of sales but it is there for some of us who witness this killing and want it to stop or at least dramatically reduced.
I don't care if anyone knows where I am, I just never thought it was important, I am on the southern end of the Sunny Coast, although I don't want any irate pro fishermen intimidating me or my family thanks.

    Re: Caught with Illegal Catch

INTENT! - can't get with this somehow; my apologies. I do not believe this bloke intended to kill this shark, I also suspect it was dead when he hauled it aboard.....not sure there isn't a cop-out happening here by the DPI.....fark, would that be possible?????

    Re: Caught with Illegal Catch

Yeah enough said but I wasn't saying there was any intent, just an accidental casualty I assume. Doesn't make me feel any better though :/
