    Peel Island in northerlies

    G'day,

Just wondering how the waters around Peel are in a northerly up to 20-25kts? She jack up a fair bit down there, or is there some protection? Never fished down there before, and wouldn;t mind having a crack as the northern bay is out.

    Thanks for the help.

yeah mate it jacks up big time here too, on a northerly it would be as smooth as in horse shoe bay on the southern side of the island. it could blow 40 knotts from the north and horse shoe would still be like glass. On a southerly.... ya could ride a surf board in horse shoe... gotta love moreton bay.

Thanks very much, bf90. Just tossing up how a 5.5m halfie would go getting there from Raby Bay in 20kt northerlies. Only 6km, but could be a long one if it really gets up like the northern bay. Any thoughts? Thanks again, mate.

I dont think it matters where you are in Moreton Bay if it is blowing 20knts northerly then you are in for a ruff ride.

Cuzzamundi the 6km trip is no doubt doable in a 5.5 half cabin but it will be unconfortable.

All acheivable getting to the southern end of peel, but what are you going to catch in a nice, but sandy bottom around horseshoe bay? Flathead? Might be lucky enough if you hang around the edges of reef east from sw rocks for small squire or reef species, and depending on the wind direction you might also scoot over to goat island but don't anchor in the main channel where ferries use to get to Dunwich. I guess soaking a few prawns or squid at anchor isn't such a bad idea, drop a few pots closer to straddie for a few sandies.... better than being stuck at home.

The area between Cleveland and Peel can get downright nasty in a strong northerly with a run out tide. Better off running a bit further South to Redland Bay and play around Macleay and Coochie

Cheers for all the advice, fellas!

You're all correct, as I went today and found out. Started at Raby Bay at 1pm (stiff 20kt blowing) and she was pretty ugly. Went a bit of the way to Peel, then turned around and came back to ramp. Bloody nasty short sharp chop. On the trailer she goes and off to Viccy Point ramp we go. Much better over to Coochie and Macleay, and decided to head over to Straddie. Some decent chop, but was doable. Came back same way into a formidable chop. No fish, but more wanted to get out and about, so I'm happy.

How does the area fare in southeasters? Any better?

    Thanks again for the advice.

Cuzza, as you would expect around the bay islands there will be areas of less open water you will be shielded from the prevailing wind, but if your boat is 5.5mtrs I would think around this area you would just need to take it slow in exposed areas, but here is the disadvantage with bigger boats. I hate Vic point ramps because for one, the one around facing Coochie will polish your prop for you and leave a few marks if you trim down too early and the other ramp along the jetty is very exposed to SE winds and is a nightmare trying to get the boat retrieved. You are better using wyman creek which is far more protected in ANY windy conditions

Thanks, Scalem. I'll look up the Weinam Creek ramp - do you know what street it's on? Can you launch on any tide? We looked at the ramp facing coochie and decided against it 'cos it was packed, so I'm glad we didn;t wait. Thanks very much for the help.

    Hi Cuzza

Meissner which becomes Banana - Follow the markers and you will be fine. I polished the leg here too but was my mistake being on the wrong side of the reds at low tide.

Great. Thanks again, mate! Easy to do the polishing act - was on the wrong side of starboard just yesterday over straddie way, as I thought Port direction would've been South (directly over from Macleay), I guess not! Luckily only a bit of sand stirred. Is it always a carpark over in the protected bays of Peel and Coochie? Couldn;t get over the amount of boats, even on a rough day.

Yep. At Easter you can walk a shortcut from one side of the curving bay to the other by hopping from boat to boat. Probably get a bit more drunk in the process too.

30 years ago I used to think it was very crowded there when there was about the same number of boats as is there nowadays on a rainy windy day.....

    Re: Peel Island in northerlies

I don't know if I am doing something wrong but the ramp facing coochie is terrible on a low tide. Is there actually a channel into the ramp. I have tried a few things there but seem to always find the prop polishing shoals. It's good on high tide but also in a 5.5 it's a bit tough. Redland bay at wienam creek is very sheltered. That channel going across towards coochie can get a bit lumpy but in a 5.5 it is fine.

Shauno555 I know the ramp where the barge comes in is a little shallow straight out - have to veer to port side (facing south east) pretty quickly. There is a definite passage there, I guess to cater for the barge. The other ramp, I;m not sure. Looked like a nightmare to launch in the rough, though. Didn;t look too deep, either. I think this is the one Scalem was referring to, so it sounds shallow.
