    Rockhopping 1770

Hi all, i was just wondering if anyone has fished the headland at 1770 for pelagics? I've heard of people getting some nice fish off there. Of course it's not a game for the unexperianced and it's been several years since i've fished the stones (in SA) and would like to get back into it. I have had a bit of a walk around the area but am unsure of exactly where the recognised fishing 'platforms' or tracks to them are? Any help or past experiances would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Zac.

Not for about 6 years, Can be really good fishing for tuna and macs, But can be a nightmare getting them past the sharks.

Quite common mate the catwalk is the most popular spot at the headland to round hill creek. Best bet is to call into the Agnes tackle shop Tony or Josh will give you the good oil for this area.

Thanks guys, is it possible or practical to go trolling around the headland to target the tuna and macs? I have several other blokes that could tag along for a trip, but i am the only one with the gear to fish the rocks (not something i want to do solo!). We have all got the gear to target these fish from a small boat on a calm day, so that could be another option for me? And what tides are the best?

At our M&G we saw the lads from jigging Master there, they mentioned the Macs were around but the sharks were bad.

Its luck of the weather gods fishing that spot.. because the water is fairly shallow it doesn't take a hell of a lot of wind to dirty the water and the tuna and mackerel disappear.. its a magic spot though mate.. Take heaps of gear though.. the sharks are horrendous and if you get past them you will have the huge resident grouper to contend with.. generally a hook up to landing fish ratio of about 20% is about right and sometimes it drops to 5%.
If you have a boat. You should have no dramas hooking some fish i would just troll some laser pros or Rapalas a few hundred meters off the headland just before sunrise and you should catch something.

Rock fishing The Catwalk is unlike other rock fishing areas, as it is not highly rated as " dangerous ".

I have fished it many times solo with no issues.

Cod, Macks, Tuna, GT's and Black Marlin are common captures from there.

ON a good day, there will be a dozen other fishos there anyway...... it can get like Queen street.

Trolling the headland from the bar.... south past the Catwalk and down to the Joseph Banks NP will produce for you. Stay within 100mtrs of the mainland for best results.

    cheers LP.

Couldn't have said it better myself fez, nathank and Lucky Phill. The rocks are fun but the causeway is bloody dangerous (better if the log is still there), when the fish are busting up a couple of hundred meters offshore a boat is the go. Having said that the macks are sometimes within 100m of the rocks as Lucky Phil said. Good luck.
