I think I killed my Touareg!!

While dragging Back In Black home from Alstonville yesterday, our Touareg V8 petrol died, & ended up on the back of a flatbed.
Juna wants to move on, as its now 7 years old with 180K on it. What would you suggest for towing 3.5t (minimum!!) with great comfort (Juna has had spinal surgery, & thats why we got out of Landcruisers)
Don't want to look at small trucks, 250's etc.
    What are your thoughts?

bugger - have you had it pulled down and diagnosed yet? i wouldnt be making a decision until you find out what happened and the cost involved to fix it. being a vw i cant see it being cheap to recon/replace the motor if thats what happened as 180k isnt exactly high mileage but i guess towing big loads does add a fair bit of stress.

on the other hand if youve already got approval to go shopping who would refuse the chance lol

    Ryan,
She's been playing up a bit for the last 3 months. Driving along & all of a sudden, no power, for up to 4 seconds at a time. Pretty disconcerting when powering through a round about. Cricks at Maroochydore have no idea. They had the car for a week & a half, couldn't get it to fault & nothing registered on the diagnostics. Treated like crap by Cricks, so took it to Austral VW Newstead. Same thing. Couldn't find a fault & nothing on the diagnostics. The did an injector recall which Cricks couldn't be bothered doing & thought that fixed it. Fine for 2 weeks. Gets worse when hot & under load, which I thought would be a clue, but I think they rely so heavily on diagnostics, the problem solving skills of the older mechanics have left them.
Car has been faultless for 7 years & tows the big girl fine, but I wonder if it is just too much load. She is 228kw & 500nm so if we upgraded I'd want 600 nm, no less. As you say, wait & see what the outcome is.
Great, I have my boat back, & nothing to tow it with!!!

They are renown for bodgy fuel pumps, not saying that's your problem but is common. Does it cut out under load, ie: after you have backed off and then start to accelerate again.? I'm not a mechanic but it could be something very very simple like a blocked fuel tank vent hose or bodgy fuel cap too, causing a vacuum in the fuel tank, this would cause the pump to have trouble sucking fuel and also hinder the fuel return, would explain why electronic diagnostics aren't picking the problem.180k is not a lot of work especially if the car is regularly serviced.

Fuel pump relays have been known to be intermittently hesitant.

Have a look at a Jeep Grand Cherokee V8, Very comfortable cars, reasonably small in size. 3.5t towing.

Deano70- definitely worse under load. Yesterday when it started doing it, I used the paddles to put it in 4th, as it would start to spit in 5th, worse in 6th, but drop back to 4th it was OK. Luckily it got us over the Gateway Bridge before dying. I reckon I would have made the news if it died there. Friday peak hour traffic, school holidays & a long weekend!!
Thanks for the tips as I will pass them onto Austral as they have no idea.
    Keep them coming.
    Thanks,

Here is a pic of the VW on the truck. What an epic day. Started playing up northern Gold Coast & was fearful she wouldn't make it over the Gateway, but used the paddles, kept it in 4th & it sailed over, but near Nudgee she totally failed, VW saying it went into "limp home" mode to protect itself from any further potential damage.
Pulled into an emergency lane after doing a couple of kms doing 5kh per hour.RACQ were a waste of time, saying they could get the VW towed straight away but couldn't get a tow till Tuesday for the boat, saying it needed a pilot vehicle. How could it need a pilot vehicle when I towed it?? And $1200 for the tow to Noosa!!
As she was telling me, a towie turned up & heard the conversation. He took the phone & told her he would sort it out. He took the VW to VW Newstead & organised another truck to tow us home. This is 5pm by now, pulling up at 1.30pm.
Headed off to Noosa & had to stop at Palmview for him to drop a forklift off he had on the flatbed. Thats where I took the photos of the boat, realising I didn't have any full length photos.
Got home & he backed it in real well. We unhitched it & he didn't lift the hydraulics & as he went out the gate, tore up a section of the runner the sliding gates ran on. Had to get an angle grinder & cut it out & manhandle the gates shut. A real crappy end to a shocking day. Inside drinking my first & very well deserved red by 8.30

That sort of weight will kill the best of em eventually ..... unless you go a truck specially if any distances are involved .
There are plenty of fourbys that have high power & torque ..... my V6 Diesel jeep would fit the bill - but for how long ?
The Touareg V8 TDI .... would be hard to beat

Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
    Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

We might have to wire up mine to suit your brake system so next time i get a call on friday afternoon coming up to a long weekend saying i'm stuck on the highway i'll be at least able to tow your boat. The lengths some will go to advertise the sailfish name after some customer service. We'll just park it here and slow the trafic down to get a good look at peak time on a busy day. To think this is the guy giving me grief a couple of weeks back about waiting a couple of hours for the tide to come in.

Re: I think I killed my Touareg!!

Gav, I flicked both Darren from Sailfish & Ash from Webbe Marine a picture of the boat on the roadside with a message we were doing some promotional work for them, with thousands of cars per hour passing us. Darren called me & said he'd jump in his cruiser & come pick us up- mindful he is 2.5 hrs away! I thanked him but said its in hand. Then Ash rings from Sydney & says he can have someone there within 2 hours! Makes RACQ's effort pretty poor. I REALLY appreciate your offer guys.
I was thinking when I was taking the piss out of you about the tide this is going to come back & bite me, I just didn't think it would have been so soon!

Chris-I agree with you. The V8TDI has 250kw & 800nm. She'd do the job beautifully. Even mine managed to drag it easily, that is until it stopped! Not sure when the new model hits Australia though, as I couldn't find any info on it.

Yes Funchy, that was Juna & I just filling a few hours in. Glad you enjoyed seeing the boat, but it would have been preferable if you saw us on the water. I reckon your yak would fit nicely between the hulls!!

Mate sounds like you need to look at a y62. It "only" has 550nm but its spread across the whole rev range and with 400hp you know it has top end too.

With comfort high on the list it would fit the bill.

Otherwise if you need 600nm you limited to euro top shelf motors if the LC200 is not an option.

    Yoot- what is a y62 & a LC200?
    Pardon my ignorance.
