Catfish Cleanup - Brisbane River VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Many SE Qld members would have seen the TV or newspaper reports of the Catfish Kill that has been going on in the upper Brisbane River below Wivenhoe Dam.
SEQWater and the Somerset Regional Council have been working hard all week to clean up the dead & dying catfish from the larger sections of river where they can get their boats to, however they cannot get to the smaller, shallower sections. This is where we can help..
Somerset Regional Council have agreed to extend insurance coverage for volunteers who come over this weekend and register to help. We need people with kayaks, canoes and small boats to come out to help collect these fish & drop them into the bins strategically placed in key locations by council.
What you will need:
Kayak or Canoe
Life Jacket / PFD
Rubber gloves (if you have any), or we will provide some,
Lip grippers or landing net may help
Sun protection; hat, sunscreen
Drinking water
Working mobile phone (so you can phone for assistance or we can track you if overdue)
What will be provided:
- Fish Holding bag (limited amount available)
- Rubber Gloves
- Dump Bins at strategic locations
- Insurance coverage
I'm inviting anyone who can offer an assistance to come along to help cleanup this beautiful river, noting that this is where most of Brisbane's drinking water comes from, AND if these dead fish aren't removed it could affect the other great fish found here eg Bass, Golden Perch, Mary River Cod and Qld Lungfish.
Volunteers can register at the Twin Bridges Recreation Area from 9:00am today & tomorrow. Once signed in you will be allocated an area to cover.
If you have a spare hour, or can come all day it will definately make a difference.
The first 30 volunteers will recieve a hand made Australian lure.
Many thanks to those volunteers already attending & hope to see some good folks from Ausfish come along as well.
Cheers,
Garry Fitzgerald
