Boat Transport towing rather than truck from Brisbane to Cairns

    Hi all,

After suggestions about what would be the best (by best I mean cheapest) way to get a boat from Brisbane to Cairns.

I was planning on towing it back myself but my new BT 50 is stuck in Japan somewhere and not due for another month or so.

Ive looked at boat transport but it'll hurt to the cost of $5k. also looked at train but looks to be about $4k.

Wondering if I could hire from thrifty or some sort of hire car joint a landcruiser or light truck to get it home. 3-3.5t.

    Any one got any suggestions?

    Scott.

    I think this is a no-brainer.
I would wait a month for the arrival of the BT50 and tow it back yourself.
All other options will be big dollars.

5k is a lot of money considering Brisbane- Melbourne is 1k. May be worth getting some more prices.

My experience is much the same, similar size rig from Port Douglas to Sydney....Quoted $6500. Pretty scary.Decided it can wait till I get enough time off to do the trip.

It is not as easy as you think hiring either. Go onto the hire sites and do an online quote. If it is a one way hire it gets expensive.

    LOADSHIFT... http://www.loadshift.com.au/

Loadshift is a web site designed to find loads for truckies. You as a buyer can find backloads and get quotes ect. Just enter your request and if someone can do the job they will contact you with a quote. If you find someone to do a back load it will be heaps cheaper.

A mate has had great success finding cheap backloads through this method.

Hire car mobs don't often allow towing.

    Hi Scott,

You could try Express boat transport. I thought their quote was reasonable.
Port Macquarie to Cairns was $2500 +gst for a 6m plate boat. The size of your boat will influence the cost.

This guy is hauling lots of stuff, esp caravans from sydney to Qld. He charges 1.45/km going north and does back hauls as cheap as .65/km. Does lots of boats.

Do it yourself, safer, have the right insurance, set it up properly for the tow. I found it a nightmare trying to get someone reliable, had the right insurance, and who would actually return my calls, one bozo rang me when I was half way to Vic (where I drove to get it) you should do it yourself and enjoy the ride. Don't risk it.

If Mazda have the same delivery issues for the BT50 as the Ranger (& they will) I wouldn't count on your BT50 to be only a month away. It'll be coming out of Thailand and I have had one on order since April and dates still being pushed back.

Re: Boat Transport towing rather than truck from Brisbane to Cairns

I recently drove from Brisbane to Port Douglas in a 6 cylinder Commodore towing a 4.7m boat - all quite loaded up. The trip up cost $441.00 and return $458.00 There would have been approx $40.00 petrol left in the tank at the end of each trip
Travelling north we took four days and three days on the return trip to Brisbane.
Wish I was still up there permanently

    Regards

Hi, I'm getting a boat shipped up from Brisbane to Innisfail next month, I was quoted 1.5k from Brisbane Yamaha. I'd thought of driving, but putting over 3000k's on my car wasn't good in my MIMD, ans that means the trailer will have approx 1600k' s on by the the I get back. So I've gone for the transport option.
