    Re: Hydraulic Steering

I have decided on a Hydrive 5 kit as I have limited space in the transom. All is fitted up all I have to do is bleed the system tomorrow . It has been a misson as the boat had a rack and pinion steering set up under the console , so when they fitted the boat out they used the rack as a spot to mount the wiring loom off. So after pulling the cable set up out I had a foot well full of wiring. So a day making mounting brackets I think I have it all sorted .

Great, I am sure it will be worth the hassles and cost. A bit of a deal breaker for these days not having Hyd Steer on any foward steer rig.

Stay away from the BCS stuff. i think they were called Ultraflex. I have replaced one ram and the new one is pitted already. Sea star next time.

    Re: Hydraulic Steering

I have a hydrive sports kit connected to a 80hp 4 stroke. It was the cheapest (on sale at whitworths) and aussie made so looked good. First problem was a leaking ram seal which meant I had to pull out of a comp. Failed after 6 hours use in pretty heavy conditions. I dont have enough thread on the pivot tube to damage the seal so it was a unit fault. Hydrive repaired it but I had to pull everything apart and pay the postage to send the ram back. Then the helm started leaking, again i had to pull it all apart send it to them and then refit it all when it came back. Fault was caused by a batch of substandard o-rings. Now I must say hy-drives customer support and service was excellent certainly cant fault that and they even sent me more oil and locktite, but 2 failures in 12 months and probably 12 -16 hrs of my labour to refit and not to mention all the fn oil that gets everywhere even though i was as careful as I could be, leaves me regretting not buying a dearer unit.

I have a baystar and it has not been any good since new.
It catches and is niosey so i was told it needed bleeding which i did but it is now stiff to steer.
The insructings i was given to bleed it you needed to put a hole in the bottom of the oil bottle to allow the oil to run which i did not do so maybe it is my fault that i still have the problem.

I was told to stay away from the Baystar and the bloke at the shop showed me how the Hydrive only has O rings not hydraulic seals. Do some more digging around before paying up.
