    insuring a homemade boat

hi after the shyguys little mishap on the weekend .
it got me thinking about insurance a bit more seriously .
i have been to a few like club maine cgu etc etc as soon as you tell them you have built it yourself they don't want to know about it .
has anyone else had this problem and how have you got around it
    cheers brett

Hey Brett one way you can get around this is to get a survey done on the boat to have something there to show it has been built to an acceptable standard as I sure it is. it is a bit like an old boat so de speak alot of insuerers will want a survey done if a boat is over a certain age to make sure they are seaworthy to. I am not sure on the cost of a survey with it would be worth it's weight in gold if anythig were to happen.

im going through this at the moment.

picked up an old tub and am completely rebuilding it, originally it had
the usual motor well and i have cut it out and lifted the transom right up
    and fitted a pod.

To get around the insurance i got it inspected by a marine surveyor
and have followed his recommendations on flotation etc so i can get a new
build plate and thus having no problems with insurance.

I am using nick lockyer who was recommended to me by forum members here
