    live baiting barra

hey all, as things start to warm up in the far north again i thought id give the barra a go.
well i didnt have much luck,we started flicking lures on the high tide with no results and then was able to collect some bait as the tide had dropped a fair bit,we managed to get 6 nice mullet and start live baiting.
we went to a likley place where barra and jacks may be,and offered our live baits to the fish below.
but our baits seemed to be getting mouthed by barra i think!!! you could tell there was something having a go at them from the action of the rod,and after some time after a so called hit we brang the mullet in and they had been scaled...barra...
both baits were hooked at the back of the dorsal fin,one had a small sinker and the other unweighted.
were they just teasing us or are we rigging then wrongly or is that just fishin lol

    but i wasnt at work

    cheers marty

could have been muddies playing with your livies if they were crushed a bit although I would have thought barra if it was only scales gone
try a stinger just behind the anal fin and the other hook in front of the dorsal or in the mouth

Marty, Barra do this a fair bit. Biggest thing is patience. I often free spool when they are like this. Sometimes they will pick the bait up and drop it several times. At times the only indication is that your bait will move a few metres. If your line moves without much tension, let it run, sometimes up to 20 m or more before striking.

Other times of course, the barra just hit and go.

If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

My first Barra was caught on live bait. What a fluke it was too because my first Barra was 102cm! Talk about beginners luck.
