We are well underway to fulfilling our commitments to fishers
While Marks engagement here is a good thing and he should be commended and appreciated for doing so....
Only 85 tells you that most think its pointless discussing politics.
In all my years I have never seen anyone swap sides of a political debate after listening to the others argument.
Most here (to some extent me also) probably don't see any point in political debates.
Mark, Phil and others are doing a good job keeping us informed.... but most of us are more interested in results than political discussion... hence the low poll response.
I will crawl back under my rock now...
lots have swapped sides..even pollies..Bob Katter Snr..Bob Katter Jnr..Cheryl Kernot...recently the 3 amigos that have left the LNP..that other bloke that jumped ship a year or two back and started his own party which has, I think, folded. The political world is littered with many.
I think our man WalrusLike was refering to " anyone " outside of the political party system.. bystanders and or " civilian " commentators.
That maybe true...... an alligence is built in from an early age... IMO..... not necessarily a party alligence, but a agenda / system... that is ....... socialist, capitolist or greenie ( but they don't count... )
Overall and is a fact, that the majority of political commentators ( us ) are apathetic and do nothing more than debate, whinge, comment to each other. The majority do not " get involved " with the political parties or representatives to " actually do something " about the injustices, issues or problems. Further, we ( sic ) do not participate or become members of any Lobby or representative group that wants to " actually do something ".
There is no hiding behind the fact that ..
1..... Recreational Fishing is Queenslands largest activity ( commercial or recreational ) by participant numbers.
2...... The Economic ( attributal ) input to the economy runs at close to 1 billion dollars per year.
3...... We have no dedicated Government Portfolio / Representation
4..... We do not have a single representative group that DOES represent us.
5..... We are the " poor cousins " ( in the eyes of the State Government ) to the Qld Commercial Industry and hence get a shafting on a regular basis.
6... We do have small groups and individuals ( including politicians ) that do the very best they can with what tools and resources they have , and have done over many years to achieve a better outcome for us all. Unfortunately, these individuals and groups also get hammered by the " bystanders ".
The fishery was not screwed over a year or two.... and will not be fixed over a year or two.... the wheels of recovery ( Government decisions and implimentation ) turn slowly and particularly when those wheels are attached to a cart over-loaded with crap and heading uphill...... no one steering it and only a few putting their shoulder into it.
In the bilge, I have asked for input into the arti reefs submission. 60 views and 3 responses. Seems to about right for the " apathetic " attitude.....

Yeah that's right Pinnie but they are pollies swapping for their own career or conflict type reasons.
I was referring to ordinary folk changing their convictions after discussion.
But really my point is simply that the lack of poll responses reflects the general lack of faith in political words.
Actions are what count.
Ah... cross post. Phil you are correct that apathy is rife.
You are involved and active in representing our concerns so we who are inactive and apathetic should say thanks for your efforts....
So Phil. Thanks for your efforts. The world needs hard workers like you.
(I should disclose that in fact I lean slightly left and slightly green.... That might earn me a tarring and feathers....)
One thing to be a Greenie and another to be a " Conservationist "..... the majority of Rec Fishers are Conservationists.
No one should get tarred and feathered for their opinions or beliefs.

Another reason for the small percentage of responses is perhaps the motivation people have for being here.
I am here primarily to learn (and help in those few cases I can..,) and for the humour and good company.
Mostly political or activist stuff leaves me indifferent. That sounds bad but its true, and I suspect, fairly common.
I do admire folk who get involved and get things done but I am like many of us in that I am just part of the herd...
very true Phill..and why don't people join political parties or talk to their representatives?
1. People don't join parties because they know that their ideas and views will mean nothing..all they are is putting some money into the party coffers. Everyone knows that all parties are run by the faceless back room people and they do not care about the rank and file members.
2. Same with reps...I know from past experiences that most members will just respond with something like: " I have passed your correspondence on to the relevant Minister"..and nothing is heard back from them.
Or..the rep will just send back some waffle stating the parties policy and obviously they do not want to listen to your grievance etc about that policy. It is all the same drivel back from them these days.
I can remember when I was a kid..at least once a month the local member would be at the local shops..listening to what the constituents had to say. When does that happen now?
I used to have a great Member at Everton years ago..he arranged for me to have a meeting with Peter Shooter ( I think that was his name) prior to the green zone implementation at the Member’s office. One on one to air my views.
The last Member ( Murray Watt)..I phoned his office on one occasion. I got the “Mr Watt is not available at the moment, can you call back later”..which I did three times. I then left a message and asked for him to call me back. Never did get that call.
I am in favour of the arti reefs but am not in favour of private funding of these. How can the average lay person have any knowledge of materials required, area required, costs and implementation of these. They need to be constructed correctly to be beneficial. If rec fishing is such a big industry then it is the Govt’s responsibility to provide for that “industry” as such. They have research/inquiries into everything else. Health, education, transport etc etc. The Govt has an obligation to also do the research etc into the rec fishing sector. Until they realize this and implement it, they are failing this sector dismally.
I agree with the thoughts that we have no single group representing us and probably never will. With rec fishing there are so many aspects. Estuary, off shore, fresh water etc and Qld is such a huge area that there will always be grievances that one area gets more representation than another. Also, in some of these groups, individual egos start to run riot and that also leads to discontent.
I don’t believe many of us are apathetic however we do not have the knowledge to provide answers to the many problems. This is where a pro active Govt comes to the fore. They should be implementing the actions required based on proper research etc.
It would be like me being on any rep body for rec fishing..I know the estuaries of South Qld reasonably well..as for offshore..bugger all. For the rest of the State I know even less so that would be wasting a lot of time and creating angst amongst the other members.
What are the answers? I really wish I knew.
You are to be thanked for your efforts in contacting MP’s etc but some of us do not have the knowledge you have and that would then be akin to not everyone pulling on the cart in the same direction.
Is doing something the same as achieving something?
I believe a lot of people are not apathetic but realistic.
What's the point in doing something if it's all for no avail? Time is precious to most and if I have to bash my head against a brick wall I would really want to achieve something more then getting a headache.
In the last 10 years what decisions has any Government made based on input from recreational anglers?
What became of the on-line petition Timi started? It was seconded by Mark (an insider) so it should have drawn some attention.
When it all boils down Governments of today will do what they want. They have virtually no interest in what the majority of people want. All Governments are interested in is how do we keep power or how do we get into power. If that gaining/keeping power means bending over to minority groups for preferences (ie Greens) then so be it.
The current LNP in QLD. They may not have depended upon preferences to gain power but what is their policy in relation to recreational fishing?
Do they care about recreational anglers? The one line in green zones thing keeps popping up and the excuse has been it's low on the priority list gives me reason to believe if a signature is low on the priority list then what hope is there for something largish in scale ie a network of arti-reefs or some new boat ramps or even dredging of coastal bars. But they have time to think about a new Parliament house and wasn't there a rumour about a motel or casino or something they wanted to build down the coast?
What about all the funding the LNP has cut from projects that better recreational fishing prospects whilst also bettering fisheries of various all descriptions? ie fish ladders up north, restocking, kids days etc etc
If recreational angling is low on their priority list then it's low on their priority list. Nothing we can do will change that.
When will it go up in the priority list? Probably within about 6 months of the next election
In relation to privately funded arti reefs. Why not just sell some of the sea floor off like land in a subdivision on the Gold Coast and let people do what they want with it?
All I hope is they (all levels of Government) start listening to ordinary people like us.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good
It all boils down to political will - in particular those at the top of the pecking order .........
If the leader has an agenda / interest - things will happen ..... forget the real need or priority.
I still remember Bob Carr in NSW locking up the national parks ....... it was his personal agenda. (he didn't need to buy the green vote either) .

I like to see something specifically for anglers, besides service cut backs and increased freshwater licence fees.
