    40th Birthday Barra

With a mate reaching the tender age of 40 we decided to have a surprise birthday extended weekend on Hamilton Island, we had prebooked a charter from the island only to be dissapointed when we found out two days before that they were having mechanical difficulties and were not able to take us on a charter. Fortunatley Sharon from Fish Dive in Airlie beach was able to help us out alot by moving a few clients around so that we could get on a charter for his birthday. We left from Shute Harbour with Richard as our guide for the day. The wind was blowing hard so decided to head up one of the creeks in order to get out of the wind, we came across a tree that would have only been an area of about two maybe three square meters. First couple of cast with a livie and I was on, snap!! Must remember to change the leader from the trip before next time, then it was on! we were throwing livies around the snag when my brother decided to get a little game and throw under a branch that was overhanging as soon as the livie hit the water a beast nailed it, he managed to drag it out only to lose it about half an arms length from the net. There goes the fish of a lifetime was his call. Once again same bait exactly the same spot, took about four casts to get the bait in the right spot, if you were half a meter out than no good, on again this time success, high fives all round. Everytime we put a bait in that spot, a barra was nailing it, we would have caught about 10 barra in this spot all good size ones, the snag would have swallowed at least 5. For myself I was trying to drag one out on a plastic rod with 16lb leader, they were taking the plastic but wrapping me around the snag or snapping the leader everytime, 30lb next time. only reason we left was because of the tide running out, I think Richard (our guide) was even keen to stay a little longer. What a sensational way to celebrate a mates 40th. Thankyou Sharon and Richard from Fish Dive great effort.
