Thread: Which Radio VHF

    Which Radio VHF

I need help in choosing a new radio with DSC for the dash of my boat. I want it to sit on my dash not mounted in my dash, so a small size is handy but more important it needs to be reliable and water resistant.. White is preferred but not totally important.
I am budgeted to $350.00 and need to buy ASAP, so I can install this weekend before heading to 1770 on Monday..

    either:
    IC-M412 VHF
    GME GX600D VHF with DSC
    Garmin VHF 100i
    Lowrance LVR-880
    Simrad RS25 DSC

or what do you recommend.. ??
    Cheers

    Re: Which Radio VHF

Worked it out... So your suggesting the ICOM M-412W (white)

I am running a HDS10 as my GPS so being able to hook it all up together later would have some benefits.
ICOM looks like it uses NMEA 0183 connectivity so should work....

The Lowrance LVR-880, uses NMEA 2000® DSC integration so would be easier to hook up (maybe)

I have a Navman which has the same screen color as all on your list except the Garmin VHF 100i and I find it hard to read. The garmin might be easier being green???? Get one with a big screen and big font. Its not the channel that's difficult to read but all the other stuff on the screen.
Maturity is not when we start speaking BIG things,it is when we start understanding small things

    Just a thought.

Why not just use what you have and when you get back home cruise around online and have a look what's for sale in the Divided States of Embarrassment?

    Re: Which Radio VHF

Mate I thought about just living with what I have, But its a huge pain the ass to climb into the cabin to use the radio and its hard to hear if your down the back of the boat with the bait pump running or even cruising along, so having one one the dash makes a lot more sense. I will leave the one I have now as a backup unit.

I am leaning towards the ICOM at the moment, But getting the next model one up would be nice as it has more button to never use !!

Just sit Tangles in the cabin and use him as an on board repeater.

Grand Marlin recommends the Icom brand.

I've got the M412, but wouldn't mind upgrading to the M505, so that I can install the optional Command Mic. Nice bit of kit, but a bit expensive when you buy both.

But then again, I've already got way to many buttons and knobs to play with.

Did some research on this myself recently and came to the conclusion that the I-com was the best option....go with that one.

Bugger I was going to suggest an external speaker for your existing one. I have the older Icom 411. So far so good.
