The Bayside Bulletin Tuesday Morning 09/10/2012
Workable solution needed on car parking.
By Bayside Bulletin
Oct. 8, 2012, 5:30 p.m.
LAST Sunday's situation at Wellington Point Reserve and boat ramps highlight the real dilemma facing Redland City Council over interests of boaties and tourists.
This was a classic day that exposed the reality of the battle over the parking bays between people who come to the point to picnic, walk through the water out to King Island, or simply stroll by the bay and those with trailer boats who want to enjoy a day on the bay.
The second reality is that the location is relatively car dependent for both day trippers and boaties. Boaties have to tow a trailer by road to the boat ramp while most picnickers come in groups with supplies for a picnic, time on the beach or a swim.
While there is a commonality between the demand for the same parking areas on certain days, there are many occasions when what is good for day trippers is terrible for boaties. The difference is wind. While day trippers can put up with strong winds, boaties ordinarily can't.
The scenario to consider is that most recreational boaties (perhaps not fishermen) would go boating in the morning. Day trippers may still be arriving at lunchtime or late afternoon.
The reason why there is such a robust debate is a simple case of supply and demand at Wellington Point and conflicting interests between users. There is excessive demand at times for parking and limited supply a classic economic theory condominium that unfortunately has winners and losers.
Boaties have a strong case in that they contribute money through their boat registration fees to boating facilities such as the ramp and, by necessity, the requisite trailer bays that should come with the launching ramp.
Day trippers, whether they are residents or tourists from Brisbane and beyond, have an equal expectation that there is a spot where they can park while enjoying the location and facilities promoted by council.
There needs to be an acceptance that the boat trailer bays are for a specific purpose and should be available for boaties. Equally, there needs to be an acceptance that when the trailer bays are likely to be vacant that other park users can use it.
Whether a decision about when the bays are needed on each day on the weekend can made by a park warden or similar is a matter for further discussion and costing. The problem won't go away. A workable solution is needed.
the next boaties market at victoria point will be a great opportunity to garner support. last time i was a little unorganized. i am getting smarter as time progresses. this time i will set up a marquee and table with some signage and have a petition to sign along with some better prepared flyers. i am sure this will be more effective.

and today i went to see the winner of qld's best bacon award and he will do us a good deal on lashings of bacon, their famous (round here anyway) reggies rissoles and his good pork snags (not the cheap bbq snags). will be a good feed.

If available on the day of the market Davo, I'll be ya deckie for the day.
I was thinking net maker that with so many people coming the best thing to do would be a whole hog roast. There really easy and taste so good. This is how i do it. http://cuban-christmas.com/pigroast.html
UNfortunately as i live in another state i wont be able to make it but hope you guys have a blast.
