    hiding floats

Has anyone used those underwater time release links from crabtec to sink your crab pot float for 12 hrs so no one else can help themselves to your crabs plz

No but it sounds like a good idea.

    Re: hiding floats

I know people that have used them with varying degrees of success, the problem is the rope needs to be sort of looped under the water, and if there is any movement at all (current) it tangles up, so even you don't get your trap back, and I am not too sure it is legal to use them, you might need a Barrister to read the rules for you.

    Re: hiding floats

i have lead on my rope so that it sinks to stop wankers from cutting the rope so i wonder if they would work or use cotton reel floats like they suggest i seen them on www.crabtec.com.au

Newbie question.... Does robbing pots happen much? Or is it just: empty pot... Musta been robbed?

I woulda thought most folk would of been too scared of rifles to go robbing someone's pots.

    Re: hiding floats

WalrusLike, it happens very frequently unfortunately (depending on where you live of course, i'm in SE QLD).
There are countless reports (even on this site) and personal experiences (only twice thankfully) where pots have been slashed, zip ties cut or pots checked or taken in front of their respective owners.
I understand why people sink their pots, but I don't believe that's the answer as inexperience in such a method can lead to ropes being caught around props or pots being swept away by the current.

That's sad to hear.... It seems like such a strange and potentially stupid thing to do. You know your stealing from some other boatie, seems like ripping off your brother to me. I really am surprised to hear it.

(oh... And thanks Zealot for the dislike.... I will wear it with pride.)

We have a serious theft problem in Gladstone. With the influx of fly in workers we have been having our pots raided every trip. Even way up the little creeks.

We know because each pot gets zippy tied shut each drop.

But what do you do? Sinking floats sounds like a good idea. Gps chartplotter on board the crabbing boat will find any the don't re float. Or put 1m of rope on a pot and only dump and collect at low tide.

    Re: hiding floats

i only chase sandies now and purposely stick my pots way out in the open these days in the hope would-be thieves will be a little more wary of who may be watching... still doesnt work, i lost 4 altogether last season. No way will i ever buy those crab n gear pots. The cheapo 4 for 60 or whatever they are work just as well, and its less heart ache when they disappear.

p.s i have given up on muddies as the pots need to be left in for longer, therefore more chance of getting pinched, and the local rivers and creeks, pine, cabbage etc are full of trap thieves.
You see some pretty desperate measures taken by crabbers to secure their gear at times.

    Re: hiding floats

dean a cheap crab pot from bcf will never catch crabs as well as a propperly made pro pot the last lot of bcf pots lasted me 3 trips b4 they where rooted full of holes..i dont believe the crab n gear pots are all that good either.last lot i got from them i spent alot of trips altering them to catch crabs well enough to use them..i now have an x procrabber make my pots and these by far outcrab any pots i have used before..will add these only have 2 funnels in them and not the 4 entry pots u find everywhere these days in the shops and at 45 bucks a pop not cheep but i find 2 trips using them and the amount of crabs u get out of the pots more than pay for themselves.

as for the crab thieves there are plenty out there as well as the crab pot thieves
1 more sleep till my pots hit the water for the first time this season ...can feel a feed of muddies and sandies for lunch sunday
    cheers rosco

    Re: hiding floats

yeah fair enough rosco. I think the ones i have now were from bcf. Not the cheapest but not the best. they last a long time chasing only sandies. Probably got around 20 trips so far from these ones with a couple minor tears. The plastic legs havent cracked apart yet which is good.
I dont use the gutter guard stuff anymore, just zip tie a heap of frames in, seems to work better for me.
Im down to the clarence for couple wks as of saturday, comtemplating taking some traps or jus waiting til i get back.

Anyway hope u get a few.
    Cheers
