We understand the transducer sends a signal down much like a torch beam. If we are travelling along a drop off that is 10 metres deep, dropping down to 50 metres and that is all covered by the beam what depth will be shown on the screen? Will it be the average, i.e. 30 metres or does it bias to what the depth is in the centre of the beam or some other algorithm?
It will show you the drop off and the digital depth will jump straight to 50 as soon as you go over the drop-off. If you snake along the drop-off it will go up and down accordingly. Don't get too wrapped in the science of it all, accept what is on the screen and make use of that information to catch fish.
Basically your transducer beam is conical in shape, whatever depth is the majority will be shown. once it loses 51% of the return of that depth it will switch to the new majority depth.
