Two weeks ago I was lucky enough to spend a few days fishing and spearing my all time favourite fishing grounds, the Capricorn Cays on the Great Barrier Reef (primarily around North West Island). We've camped on North West over Christmas & New Years a couple of times before, however this was 3 days of what I love to do most, fishing, spearing and boating.
With 8 of us confirmed, two boats, permission from the boss (my lovely wife) and a few days off work, the excitement was building. With two boys under three, there hasn't been as much fishing time the past couple of years (although i'm hoping that will soon change as they both love being on and in the water).
A fortune cookie we cracked open the week before read "No Wind, No Sea" (seriously, that was actually written inside!) and it couldn't be more accurate, it was simply perfect.
We had 3 amazing days on and in the water, caught and speared some amazing fish, witnessed the magic of the GBR with countless Whales, Turtles, Rays, Fish and Sharks (Many, many, sharks, including a 3-4 meter Hammerhead that swam past as I speared a Coral Trout).
The crew I was with lives to spear, however we did manage some trolling on the way out each morning which I was extremely pleased about. Double hookups were common, with Trevally, Spanish Mackerel and Tuna being landed and of course, the one that got away (we have footage of the moment the steel trace snapped after 30 mins of fighting). The Halco White Redhead and Xrap 30's did the hard work.
Between the group we also speared Coral and Footballer Trouts, Red Emperor, Mangrove Jack, Green Jobfish, Cod and a few Crays.
I'll allow the pics to do the talking, however as always, we didn't take enough photos. I also mounted my GoPro to my speargun, so once I get organised I'll edit and upload some footage.
