navionics help.

I have recently purchased an offshore boat and it has come with dual humminbird sounder and gps set up.. I know bugger all about both units but im sure i will work them out. The gps didnt come with a preloaded card with local maps but i have a navionics app on my iphone, I was just wondering if there is any way to download the app onto a card and get it to work in the gps?? Not sure if this is a stupid question or not??
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

The sounder/gps combo is a humminbird 737.. anyone got one and if so what are your thoughts?? I guess it will be used around the 24's and 36,s off the goldy.

No you cant download the maps. you need to buy the card.

its sad that you can get it on ya Mob phone for less than $20 and how much does it cost for the card for the chartplotter $400 ???

when you buy the card for the chartplotter be careful where you fish as there is a QLD one and NSW one etc or get the Australian one like I have

murf, don't use the app on my phone and am a virgin when it comes to smart phones but on my plan (only $30) wouldn't I exceed my cap when using the app or once you download it the usage is free. I have found that when I am at the Barwon Banks I have no reception anyway.

I used the app on my Iphone all up around Pearl Bay/Port Clinton/ Island Head Creek and out to the 50Nm area and all the way back to Gladstone no worries at all

it uses stuff all Megs on your plan

I maybe need to be corrected but it works like a GPS as in it uses satellites once you have the charts in ya Phone???

used it on a mates boat several times to get us to the spots

if you had the laptop on board you could use that as the screen to view rather than the smart phone, just connect your phone as a modem

yeah i have had a good look now into getting a card.. there is two other brands and about the cheapet on is about 170 for the east coast.. wow seems such a rip off considering technology these days.. the iphone app when i got it was about 60 bucks.. guess i will have to bite the bullet damn it.. just doesn't seem air that the data cant be transferred to a registered card somehow seeming as i have already paid for a chart...

its to do with the encryption, its bound to an SDcard serial number. Unfortunately a licencing issue. Doesnt make it value for money though.

you are correct, the phone application only uses your gps device when in use (0 data download), provided you dont have an AGPS (assisted gps device) in your phone.

navioinics on your phone or tablet is a $15, Navioincs on the card that goes into your plotter $300. i will take a $15 solution to a $300 problem any day.
frankly, i like having the app on my tablet better, i can sit in my office all week and study the charts in great detail, helps with planning the trips. get a waterproof case and take it on the boat, easy. i have used the tablet to navigate me to the spots i want and then manually entered way points when i was over the mark. have been doing this for several months and as such dont think i even need the $300 plotter version any longer.

Yes I like the instant gods eye view I can get by stretching two fingers to zoom out. So much better than a button operated plotter.

Nathank, i used to have a humminbird matrix 97 combo before i upgraded. As a result i have a june 2005 "XL3 navionics gold" chip australia east and north coast coverage that i no longer use. Might be a cheaper option for you. If you want to do further research the Serial number is S/N 0000005290428. PM me if your interested.
