Headed across the bar a few weeks ago with my bro and the young one on board. With an easy run across the bar it was decided that we would head beyond the protection of the Point to chase some Dollies.Having never attempted this before we stopped to get a few livies and headed to that ever so secret spot with a few yakkas in the tank. When we pulled up Owen as always had the first bait in the water and there were blue outlines shadowing the livie in no time. In about 2 hours other boats showed up and they went off the bite but we still managed to put 7 good fish in the boat. Owen ended up getting the most (three) and the biggest going 93cms whilst my brother and I got 2 each. We went for a reef fish after that for nothing but a squire, moses perch and a pearly. After a good day on the water I started filleting the dollies and they were all fine until I got to one that had flesh like toothpaste. After some research it was found that there was a parasite that affects dollies, kingies, tailor and a few other pelagics. A few hours after the fishes' death it releases a toxin that turns the flesh into mush but it doesn't affect humans. Was a great day out and the dollies put up great fights with plenty of leaps and dives.
Well done mate. Did you try the skinning before filleting on the dollies. I tried it for the first time last trip we got them. Makes for easy cleaning!
