Hey S29
Ran into a few of the Awoonga boys at Corbett's last week and they reckon with the last spill a few weeks ago the barras that didn't leave before went over this time
that's why they came up to Corio to see if there was anything doing around here
cheers

Don't know about Awoonga Supa, but I have fished Monduran twice this year for 9 barra. Last trip in April saw me hook 8 and land 5. A couple of my hook-ups were to bigger fish that did me over in the timber. Average size of fish landed was 65cm...
Looking good for a very active Spring though most fish will probably be in the 60 - 80 cm class...
Cheers

hey pete havent fished monduran, but wouldnt mind camping down there soon and havign a flick, any pointers for the dam.

That's where we have found them since November last year, Chris, with the only exception being Rainforest Bay. Last reports I heard from Mondy in May were consistent with this theory...
In the coming Spring, who knows? The bigger fish do move down the system in October/November but nobody is sure how many big ones remain...
I am heading up in late September to try and find out!
Cheers
Pete
I wonder if it's a case of the fish that were released together - have stayed together ..........
I've always reckoned that small groups stay & grow up together ........ You can catch them in multiples as the move around and patrol an area (all seem to be the same year class)
It will be interesting to hear how you go .

Give a man a fish & he will eat for a day !
Teach him how to fish
& he will sit in a boat - & drink beer all day!

Every structure is worth a cast right from the top end of waterpark, deep, sandfly and fishing creeks and around the bay itself to the heads
we just pick a direction working with the tide and cast lures while the tide is running fast then fish with livies on the slack
for some reason even in the river where we are still having a bumper season, barras need the tide to be moving before they will grab a lure although they may take a live bait sat right on their nose
as soon as the first of the tide pushes into the holes everything in the area turns on from bait to barras and sometimes that is the only time they will feed especially in winter
the last and most important tip is put your lure right into the sticks because 90 percent of guys don't and then say there are no barramundi around here,, good luck

Fisheries electro-fishing in Awoonga this year shows the same number of large fish are there as were there before the floods.
I've found that in Wivenhoe there is a huge amount of forage species both hugging the bottom and suspending mid-water. My last trip to Awoonga showed plenty of big fish on the bottom in very deep water. I wouldn't be surprised if the fish are too well fed at the moment, and difficult to catch for that reason.
I've heard there was a local at Awoonga with good experience and electronics who thought a bay was barren of fish, the electro boat proved him wrong. Someone will solve the dilema of sorting out a combination to catch the fish again.
Dale
I fish because the little voices in my head tell me to
I cant comment on the electro fishing result & or barren bays ........ but with regard to fish sitting in deep water I cant agree. I heard this same argument 16 months ago - 12 months ago - 6 months ago & now . Barra will be where they find conditions that suit them & that will change with conditions / time of year / barometric pressure etc ......... eventually those fish will disperse & or move around .
Same goes for the well fed idea ....... barra are not always caught because they are feeding and over the years there have been explosions in the biomass along with falls - some of the best results have come when the water is literally shimmering with bait. Certainly I've experienced that at Faust , Awoonga & Monduran .
There is something else to it !

I agree with Chris (NAGG), Dale...
There have been regular captures and reports of fish from Monduran since January last year but virtually nothing from Awoonga. Even the tournaments have only raised a fish or two at Awoonga...
Maybe those big fish in the deep and midwater are big catfish. I think most of Awoonga's barra have left via the Boyne River and I have not seen or heard of any evidence to counter this thought.

Looking forward to seeing you guys again up there soon! My boats a bit big and bulky so might have to put my name down for deckie if ya's need one lol
I am heading up to Gladstone this week, just wondering if it is worthwhile chucking my Yak on the roof and going for a fish at Monduran or Awonga??? Is it still to cold to sucessfully target a Barra?? I know we have been getting heaps of Bass in the Brissy River recently and it is still quite cold.
Any tips on where to fish and or launch would be greatly appreciated!
