    Noth West Is.

    G'day,

Just after some info for my mate who wants to do a few days at North West in his half cab.
Wants to know if you can access the island and camp on it without the use of a tender. How do people do it in small boats - lugging all their gear ashore etc? Is anchoring in the lee of the island a better idea? I couldn't work out how you'd get gear onto the island without either a tender or beaching the boat at high.

    Thanks for the help.

    Re: Noth West Is.

There's been a couple of threads about this, one not too long ago I think.

Also Craigie goes there and put up a post. From what I've read, it seems to be an exercise in well planned logistics.

Try typing in "North West Island" and see what results come up.

Access to the island requires either a tender or waiting for high tide.
Lots of rocks and coral to dodge if you try too early.
Even with a tender you fish around the tide as the reef is completely exposed at low tide.

You have to carry all your gear from the beach.

If you do anchor off the reef, be sure to have a big anchor and LOTS of chain.
The "sand" is actually decomposed coral grit and disappears on the turn of the tide.
    Many boats drift.
    Cheers,
    Owen
