Took Junas dad with us out wide yesterday. Lumpy, windy, mongrel current going against wind!! Good shows but with the conditions, hard to anchor on. Seemed very slow, but ended up with snapper, hussar, gold spot wrasse, tusk fish & a 7.5kg cobia compliments of Juna, about 18 keepers all up.
All snapper caught on a jig head with a tickler of iodine bream on the hook, drifted down into the berley trail, as Dave (Goldfinch) showed us a couple of weeks ago. They only got hit when there was fish on it, which to me seems to defeat the purpose. Why note just float down a ganged pilly?

Rosco,
Juna knew she was alive getting that up, as she has some pretty serious shoulder issues she's contending with at the moment. I like to think of it as therapy for her injuries!

Hey Tony,
Funny how on Sunday I fished in close (15 miles out) and 3 x 4kg snapper and a 6kg cobe all caught on Gulp 6inch Grubs. Then had a BIG snapper straighten a TT 8/0 jig hook after an epic battle. Only undersize fish on the bait. Mmmmm????? Floated pillies, squid and flesh strips will have the same affect mate, just have to get the weight right and get them in the zone.

I hear what you are saying Dave, just wondering if a jig head makes any difference, or just run a ball sinker straight to the gangs & a pilly. Nice fish on your report, & I guarantee your swell was easier than ours 60km out. How was the current in close? Ours was ripping & the wind wasn't helping get on the mark.
Tony
A ball sinker running straight to gangs is fine, but keep it as light as the current permits to get it in the bottom half of the water column and away from the boat and in the burley trail. This increases the strike rate. Then leave it in the rod holder with the drag set light so it drifts down and gets smashed. Then you can still fish the bottom with a heavier lead close to boat without fear of tangles. The swell in close was very small, in fact non-existent on the way North but the SE'er picked up in the arvo and made for a sloppy ride home. Current was running hard against wind but at anchor worked ok.
