The unofficial Fraser Island Tailor tracking thread.

Cmon boys, I know heaps of blokes head up the island for the ekka week, it is as busy up there then as it is during the school hols. So where are your reports?

A report doesn't have to be look at me and how many fish I caught Info on where the fish aren't is just as important as info on where the fish are.

So i'm going to assume that those that went up there either got on the piss for the week and forgot to go fishing and/or caught bugger all.

Hopefully this means the fish are just moving in a bit later again this year and the tailor will be looking good for later in September again. There have been some good fish caught locally in the last week so these should take a few weeks to make their way up there.

There are plenty of people heading up from now through to October so if we all post a bit in this thread, then we can all hope to hit the ground running as we arrive on the island.

My contribution won't come in till after the September school holidays though.....

Just came back today after getting there on the Wednesday. Spent all our time north of the headlands. While we didn't specifically target tailor we did get a few come through but not in any great numbers and just choppers. We only spoke to a couple of other groups who seemed to be struggling. Between 4 blokes we maybe took home 20 if that. we targeted jew and managed to get 7 legals with about 2 dozen unders. i have never seen the weather conditions so perfect for so long up there. was very jealous of the boys who dragged boats up. sucks being between boats

Mull dog, north of waddy for the jewwies? And what'd you get them on? I'm heading up on the 8th of September so will get a report up when I'm done.

Yeah mate north of waddy. We used a variety of baits. Tailor fillets, live worms mullet squid pillies. we tried to stay away from the crowds rather than looking for any real likely spot. sharks were a bit of trouble with, what i think would of been our best fish coming in chomped in half. might sound like we did well but there was at least 40 man hours put in each day (160 hours total)with one night counting for 4 of them and one night counting for the other three and two nights scoreless.

I've got a week up there and I dont plan on sleeping much, mind you it can get pretty cosy in the waders so i might doze off in a standing position every now and again.

What kind of structure were you fishing? Rocks, deep/shallow gutters? High or low tide?

    Cheers,
    Jackash

Nice thread Kev, are you there for the week starting the 15th again? We will be on the island from the 8th to the 15th up at orchid beach again. I just have to finish a rod for throwing lures and poppers then i am set. Mull dog can you provide some basic info on targeting jew from the beach, simple stuff like what to look for gutter wise, what line and any other generic info would be appreciated. Back to the topic at hand, my barber was up last week, i haven't heard how he went yet.

hows this for a tailor tracker! a workmate of mine and his mates were camped at fraser last week. They took this snap while tailor fishing. Apparently 2 of the dudes were out fishing behind that wave standing on a sand bar. He was cruising around 2 days in a row.

Good snap kingcray. I've had the buggers beach themselves to attack live tailor aimed at jew up there. Not a good spot for a dip! Ben

yeah Ben its a great pic. We came within 10 metres of a hammer once at moreton waist deep. THAT was scary. He mustve been every bit of 10ft.

I just returned from a week at Fraser Sat 11/8 - Sat 18/8. I have been going to Fraser for about the last 7 years in a row at about the same time and this is the busiest I have ever seen it. We had to queue up at Inskip about 60 cars deep just to get on the barge. The weather was perfect for the majority of the week. The Tailor were on but for every keeper there was a throw back. We had success at Dundaburra at the beginning of the week and then found them really biting at the Maheno wreck. We spent 3 days fishing at the Maheno and the fish were on nearly all day, just the occasional quiet time. A lot of the Tailor were right on the 35cm mark but we threw all these back as fisheries were inspecting catches all day and it wasn't worth the risk. We landed a heap between 40cm and 53cm and averaged 50 keepers a day between 8 blokes who spent a majority of the time sitting on the beach drinking beer and watching international tourists. The above shark looks very familiar as there was a similar (if not the same) sized shark swimming the gutter at the Maheno for 2 days. I got within 5 metres of it before I nearly fell over trying to get out of the water. Very funny for those around me!!!

yep, saw a couple of sharks up north too. We were fishing big baits and hooks just looking for bits of deeper water. passed the crowd at maheno and wondered how they were doing. glad you got onto em Darren, dont think the big schools had made their way north yet

The barges are all owned by the same mob now. There should be at least 2 running most of the time.
