gday childers. i catch droves of them off reddy while fishing for bream / squire. mainly around the redcliffe jetty and the shallow reefs before scarborough.
They always seem to be there
65mm squidgey wriggler 1/12 jighead - any colour will do. Cant miss.
Other than that,, the little bait jig thingys work great too, and you can catch 3 or 4 at once if they dont bite off the hooks.

I found pink or purple plastics do the trick, but buy el cheapo ones if you can as the Pike tear them up.Pike are my favourite Spanish bait.
I caught a couple the other morning on 3 inch gulp minnows
Pike (sabre-tooth whiting) can make short work of plastics.
I've always had success by cutting a thin sliver (the size of a guppy is almost too big) off the white belly section of the first one I catch, and fishing it just like a plastic.
Much cheaper, lasts longer and is just as effective.

Little white/pink/silver suspending cranks, flick flick then let float/suspend, about 40mm. Like a small pink Daiwa Dr Minow or smaller.
That's just what I have had success with.

Remember the good old days: piece of white or yello wool on the bend of a long shank #4 or #6 hook used to work a treat and was pretty much free ...

Sabiki bait jigs work well but Pike can destroy them quickly. I tend to grab a 3" Berkley Minnow and trim off about 2cm of the tail. Stick this on a small leadhead jig and away you go. The alternative is a splitshot above a longshank hook with a strip of squid or Pike belly flap

Ive used and swear by pike for live bait since i was a kid and saw an old fella using them catching queenfish.
Over the years Ive found that it depends what they are feeding on as to what you will catch them on. They even get smart about one lure and you need to change.
Small hard bodies, baitjigs all sizes, plastics, small mack slugs they will go anything when they are feeding and be as hard and finicky as a trout when they are not. They also go right off the bite if something big is harassing them.

I've got to agree with the yellow wool tied onto a whiting hook and rig and flicked around. Been using that for 35 years around redcliffe. used to have a woolen fishing jumper with yellow stripes in the olden days, it ended up with a few holes in it haha. Pete
I remember a whiting hook, small sinker and xmas tinsel from urangan pier at hervey bay, late 70s then floating them out for GTs spanish mackeral and other unstoppables.

Up here we use little squidgies and the small white gillies tuna slugs.
I remember when I was younger using the old halco combat. When I started it was brand new. When I finished it only had the white undercoat left and I got sick of them after an hour. I remember getting a birds nest and while untangling the line they were fighting over it on the surface.
Try a 1/8 jighead and turn it into a jig buy binding nylon fiber just behind the head, the yellow part of some Telstra rope is perfect. Work your lure by jigging it. Squash the barb down too so you can shake the pike off into your live tank quickly and without handling it. This method is very fast if that's what you're after.
