I tried whale watching from GC Seaway last week.... Unfortunately didn't see any. Went in a 5k triangle south and north.

When weather is good, maybe Sunday, I was half thinking of going out from deception bay out around Moreton. I haven't crossed a bar yet (seaway once) so am reluctant to go anywhere tricky. I will do Bills course soonish.

Is the top of the bay a 'bar'? Does it have the same challenges as a bar or is it a more predictable area?

Will I likely see whales out that way? Any suggestions on ramps with a pontoon? (here is a chance to steer me away from yours....)

Thanks fellas for any tips.... Hope you get a good catch Rosco.

hey mate, no bar but plenty of shallow banks that at low tide and strong winds can get a little uncomfortable and nasty at times. if your heading out around the cape for whale watching for the first time i'd suggest you follow someone. regards, tony.

What about if you went over and followed the shipping channel out? That should be plenty deep yeah?

    Re: this sunday

yeah, bit longer but safer. i live in beachmere, its got a pontoon and at low tide head to the pearl channel and follow it then head out through either the kanga or inner freeman channel. on the high just skip straight over the banks. its not so much about enough water under the boat, it's the washing machine effect it can create.

It's no problem up around comby, there is bugger all swell about, banks will be obvious, a map plotter will assist if you have one.

Beatiful area around that end of Moreton

Always a good chance of seeing whales around the front, however it is always pot luck.

Spinnaker Sound opposite Bribie is a good ramp, no pontoon but plenty of beach.

Watch the westerleys, can make for a rough trip back this time of year.

    Cheers
