So you have realised bait outfishes plastics???
A friend through work emailed me on Monday and asked “when are you going boating next” and because we had been taking about a trip for Months, a very quick decision was made to take Peter for a spin through the south passage bar today. This was a first for Peter in so many respects. 1st trip in my boat, 1st time he has ever fished deeper than 20 meters,1st time through south passage ( he lives in Caloundra, and hatesbars mostly because Caloundra is not his favourite stretch of waterway) and 1st time using soft plastics.. What was that? Soft plastics? Another newbie for me to coach? Noop! I said he can fish any way he wanted, and told him there’s this bloke on a fishing forum named Rosco who loves fishing floating pillies with glow sinkers. That sounds novel! Glow sinkers you say? So I supplied the sinkers and pillies, the rest was up to him. I must admit after being whipped at the bait vs arti meet and greet, getting pilly juice spilled all over the floor, on my strides, adding flavour to my vegemite and cheese sandwiches was an appealing form of fishing... if I could only remember how to tie a paternoster rig! I was shaking my head in disbelief – my 1st attempt failed, the knots slipped and I was left with a bunch of grapes that couldn’t possibly catch a thing! But I was under a lot of pressure, the N/W wind and current turned offshore Moreton into a “washing machine” and it was difficult trying to remember, two hooks flying around, past my nose once, but finally got the TLD 20 deployed, dropper sinker finding bottom eventually.
Out comes the 2nd rod, a spinner with glow sinker, half a pillie.. There is a nibble, lean back and I am on! Not a big fish I am guessing and finally up comes.. a grinner! I panned the horizon, looking for someone who must be nearby surely?? No, I don’t think this is Netmakers’ grinner honey hole, so back he went, and told the fish to go back to the bay, where he belonged. Put on another bait, bang! I am on again! Another grinner! I was shaking my head in disbelief, and to add insult to injury Pete had his 1st fish at almost the same time,a nice parrot, followed by two squire in quick succession.
Three keeper fish to my two grinners! I was starting to think I was cursed. We tried to deal with the wind, putting out the parachute anchor. We tried several spots, moved up to square patch, got a wave from Mad Mackeral as he wizzed past in a mates boat. This is garbage here too, let’s get back to the 33’s.
When we got back there, it was like a different part of the world. No current, around 5 knots, getting bites.... So in the end we bagged out on Snapper and kept one nice parrot. I joked earlier that although Pete got a head start on me, I usually bring home the trophy and catch up once I get into the zone.... which is exactly what happened. Biggest snap measured 59cm. We got our bag of 8, fishing pillies brought back memories, but there you go Rosco, anyone can catch snapper on pillies, even me!!

On this occasion we brought home the bacon. Other days plastics and jigs did the job. I enjoy having several types of techniques to see which one the fish respond to on the day. Have you ever fished bait all day and come home with donuts? After a bad day fishing bait Does that mean bait does not work? But a bad day using plastics and they are crap. Keep your options open I rockon. We enjoyed using pillies..... Today!
Scalem i reckon if ya used one of them grinners and took a whole fillet side of him ,floted him down on a double snell rig, with a 10 ball or 8 ball ya might of got ya self a trophy knobbie

Welcome back from the 'dark side' Scalem! Once they get you hooked, those soft plastic things, the next thing you know it's catch and release.
Some nice fish there.
Cheers,
I love the smell of Pilchard in the morning.

It must feel good to finally bring home fish.
Amazing what you can do with bait. People have been using it for years with great results.
Just sayin.
I am with you scalem, be versatile, have a variety of techniques and use whatever works on the day. I have had trips where lures slay the bait but i have also had the opposite.
regards chris
Its all about having fun and using all the tools available. I use bait more often offshore as depth and current make plastic presentation more difficult under certain circumstances

That story stuck a chord with me Scalem, been using SP exlcusively for past 6 or 7 years but having dialled up 7 or so donuts decided to head back to the dark side and try some bait, bloody paternosters tangling up all the time, bloody heavy outfits, stink, scales & guts all over the show...having to relearn everything again however I did catch a lot more fish but they were all juviniles, (Red's, Snaps, parrot, trev, even a baby flathead 20Km out to sea?). Enjoyed my first bait session in years as it gave me more action then I had for a while but reckon I'll give SP another chance before giving up on them altogether!
Thanks for the post...
Got to go with whats working on the day.Good report and a nice feed of fish.
Life is short fish hard!!!

Well done Brian. We bagged out on donuts. Not a legal fish hit my deck. Perhaps I should have used plastics or came out looking for you. I did manage a Numb Fish though. Bet no one else did.
I used both yesterday running solo off Straddy. Got 5 trag, 2 squire, a tarwhine, 2 tailor..............all caught on bait.
Plastic outfit deadsticked produced zip.
had both perform together on many ocassions though.
Beat me on the numb fish Macca
Well done Scalem good to see you got a feed either way I fish my plastics while I have my baits in the water pillies seem to do the trick most of the time as well as the good old squid.
well done mate on gettin a feed from my honey hole, there not trophy fish but are a good chewing size,as for the 10 ball sinker floatlining i think its way too heavy for that area, the bites and hook up rates more than half by just going up to a 2 ounce sinker from the 1 ounce...hope to get out there sunday for a look.we got a feed from the coast again 6 trag and a snap.pretty ordinnay conditions on the 36's so we come back into my trag spot to near glassed out conditions, what a difference 8 k makes
