Not much diff in the hull of the formosa compared to the tabs, prefer the build and look of the formosa, as for ride, both will bang with not much deadrise in design, my old tabs was a dog in a following sea too, stable as though.
Be aware that the data may, or may not support the experience because different localized areas may have had different peak sizes. But it will certainly give a good indication.
Go the Mclay! True plate boats even though they have the clinkered side appearance. Just spent a day in a 6.5m yesterday. What a boat! I was unsure if my 585 Mclay from a few years ago was a freak boat or not as in perfect, so well mannered and good riding, but I think their entire range is now. So underated. The 6.5 yesterday gets 1.7km/l most conditions with a 150 Opti and we cracked 1.8 a few times so nearly 1nm/l. That is great. They must be easy to push.
Your making me feel bad. I just sold the 586! ... thinking "what have I done"? Needed some money for caravan and house reno etc etc
Hey Steve, one thing to remember with the Formosa is the different models. The Deluxe models have marine ply as a deck. The Tomahawk's have an alloy deck. In the Sea Rod range (same boats) it is the Classic that has the wooden deck and the Offshore the alloy. The Tomahawk and Offshore also have larger fuel tanks. I had a look at a 580 tomahawk centre cab and liked it a lot but decided against it because it wasn't the right fit for us.
I would look at the Yellowfin range if I were you.
But this next boat will do everything you want. I am sure the guys on here will agree that this is a good boat.

i love how you south east queenslanders talk about conditions
Best advice go and see how they are made in the factory if the place is a shit fight so will the boats
I did alot of homework on these boats last year when I was going to upgrade, I went to there workshop several times and spoke to Duncan about several mods I needed to do to get a 5.5M C/C Tomahawk under my house and out the back to where I store my boat.
He was always happy to talk and help me out showed me both the Classic hull and the Tomahawk being built offered plenty of advice and was only too happy to do the mods I required.
IMO these boats are good value for the money they ask for them. As you are only at Thornlands (Formosa is at Capalaba) do yourself a favour and drop in and see him.
Cheers Axl
Just been to the boat show, and I must say prices are pretty darn good.Throw all caution to the wind and buy a SeaFox.Probably one of the best looking boats there.
While I was there I did cast my eye over the Formosa range and while I am not in the market thought they were priced to sell.Wasn't alot of people around looking and all staff were keen to engage from MOST displays.
Looked at the new Signature 575RF and wasn't a salesman to be seen, hovered around looking suspicious and couldn't
raise any interest.Must have been in the dunny....
If your in Brissy go for a look.Jim

I have a formosa 5.5 centre cab with a honda 135. I've owned it for 3 years now and just clocked 300 hours. Overall I like the boat. Theres definatley a few pros and cons. It gets me along way offshore in reasonable safety for reasonable economy. I can handle it easily by myself and tows no problems. WRT that, the lighter weighter does increase the slamming and it is fairly beamy...not fantastic for chop but sits nicely at anchor. The honda is getting on the heavy side of things and I tend to trim to prevent porposing, however have a good eski setup now which helps this situation..Like any ally, I love its durability around ramps and shallow reefs..this rig has been everywhere!! Its not much fun to sleep in but I hate sleeping out there anyways. I take the odd nap during a long session on the deck....if you need. I'm a shocker for driving it on the trailer, not sure if its just me but winding it is alot easier. I'm suspicious the light weight makes it tricky..theres a few flaws so far though. The reserve bouyancy is light on. The pod at the back is free to fill with water as is alot of space under the deck. Also, the wooden deck is problematic, expecially in the humidity. Already replaced a section, and theres more to come. I'm going to lift the whole deck at some stage soon, to put alot more foam in there, as this worries me. Also, WRT the chop here (cairns) 5.5m seems just a bit small. It seems to slot between the waves. Just on that, it doesn't broach alot either...One other point to mention are the welds. When I lift the deck it going to get a good inspection, as two of the welds have cracked in the cab. It has been exposed to some choppy conditions but I don't believe the welds should have cracked. Anyways, over all, I like it...
