Airbags and light springs VS heavy springs and no airbags????
Gday,
I am planning a trip around australia next year. I am looking at a lockable canopy on the tray in which i will have all my gear (400kgs ish) and a rooftop tent on the top. I have a 70kg bullbar on the front in which i will have a 40kg winch put in as well. i have installed dual batteries in the engine bay also, and I am planning on towing a 5m boat with me.
The vehicle I will be driving is a 03/2009 Toyota Landcruiser GX ute. Coil front and leaf rear.
I am hoping someone has had previous experience with this to assist with the correct 2 inch lift that would suit me in carrying that weight without sagging in the back nor the front with the added weight while still being able to drive the ute without breaking my back when not loaded.
The front is pretty standard everyone has said just use the heavy springs but the rear Ive had some people say to use heavier leafs and just put up with the stiffer ride as airbags will spot load the leafs and causes failure, while others have said go the medium to light leafs and use airbags. . . . . . . . . . . .
Has anyone had any personel experiences they could share? And what brand does everyone recommend?
Re: Airbags and light springs VS heavy springs and no airbags????
Leave the stock springs front and rear, and run air bags in the rear. You will know when they are causing fatigue as the ride will be too rough. Keep most of the weight up against the cab.
Re: Airbags and light springs VS heavy springs and no airbags????
Go for airbags with std springs, I simply regain the normal attitude after loading the ute by adjusting the airbags. It takes very little pressure to make a big difference in attitude and ride.
I will be getting them fitted to my new vehicle this month too.
Re: Airbags and light springs VS heavy springs and no airbags????
I have the vdj 79 ute and i noticed when i bought it the rear springs had 390 kgs marked on each spring ,i went down the same road as you and decided to leave the springs as is and go with the airbags. I brought the air bag man ones at $880 ,i,am running a alloy tray when loaded with my tools i have added 500 kgs ,i run 18psi witch brings it just above level .
When i unload my tool boxes i drop the bags back to 5psi witch is min you need in the bags and i still get a smooth ride . In my last cruiser ute i had the heavy springs and when unloaded it was like riding in a german cart .
Just remember to keep all the weight over and forward off the wheels ,have read stories of cracking to chassis but i beleave it is due to to much weight at the tall end.
