Yes they always are keen to help out and even give a couple of props to try and see which one works best.

Its so funny reading some posts where people say 'bought a prop from OS cost me $350-500, saved couple of hundred dollars- stuff buying in Aus, not overly happy with it though' !!!

Solas properly would have told you not to buy that size prop to start with and would have sold you the correct prop for that application. General boaties don’thave enough knowledge to comment how sh!t there props are, there are way too many other factors that can be the problem (also the prop). Seek professional advise...its free..
Basics, if you want good hole shot you lose top end, want good top end you get sh!t hole shot, cant have the best of both worlds but there is a happy medium with a sacrifice to one or the other.

True Jerk n wind but then there are also some of us general boaties that can research and find the correct prop by ourselves saving $400 and also find out the mass produced prop purchased was so poorly manufactured damage to engine would of followed.
I agree they do offer a great service for the general market.

All to true Dicktracey. Even 50% of the purchase price locally for service and advice is a bit rich.

So Dick and Steeler what are you both saying? Buy from solas or elsewhere?
I'm a bit confused by your posts, Genuine question

Its a personal thing i suppose Purn, I never rang Solas for advise as I was never going to buy from them at double the price of Overseas. Yes they do offer great service if you havnt got any mechanical experience or don't want the hasell of working out what you need.
The way I looked at it was Local $800 O/S $400 inc frieght IMHO the advice which is available online isnt worth that, my prop had 1/2" more pitch on one blade than the other 2 it actually lost speed to standard smaller prop from 4000-5000 rpm so I had the prop scanned & cut back to even the balance and blade size.
Is the quality control better here ? not sure all come from same factory.
Is a local prop scanned for size and pitch before fitting ? wouldn't imagine so.
At the end of the day I still have a solas prop that has been repitched to what my requirements are "offshore heavy load" & I'm still infront of buying local.
So really you can support the local market or support yourself

    Ok thanks Dick
I am in the market for a new prop and generally hear that Solas are the people to go to
I'm a bit surprised that a prop could have 1/2" more pitch on one blade though, Hell wheres the quality control if something like that can get out of the factory
I'm only after an ali prop so I don't think the price difference is that great but will keep researching, I guess the benefit of buying local is that it's easier to return if an issue like yours shows up

Sorry buddy, Solas from the states mate. Even with shipping aluminium or stainless you easily 40% in front inc shipping.

Also might pay to phone a few dealers locally like ericcs says, you just might get lucky and land a dealer who has beeen sitting on some stock thats had a few birthdays.

    Re: another happy solas costomer

Its very very rare to get a prop that scans the pitch it says. Usually its 1or even 2-3 pitches smaller. You are getting into a very technical area andthis thread could go on for days about types of props and what you can do tothem. 1/2" pitch on one of the blades isn’t out too much and is very common. Its good to be balanced though.
If you have a stainless prop and want to get the best out of it this is oneway of doing it:-

1/ Line yourself up with a beacon (out of the channel if possible no currentand traffic) and have another beacon approx 80-120m away (or one far enough youjust max out revs and speed)

2/ from idle take off flat out from one beacon to another

3 / pen and paper- note down how windy, hole shot was good bad ok, max revsexactly when reached end beacon, gps top speed reached.

If you trimmed out on the plane make sure you do the exact thing each testrun. Take you results to your prop man and he will conclude your results.

Do the test a few times to make sure it was correct.

Don’t do this on a weekend...... of course. Its amazing and addictive whatadjustment can be made and results achieved.

    Cheers Chris

Forgot to mention, each time you get the prob back from getting work done, do the same test again and see if the results improved or declined, then you know what to do next. For myself, this is the only guy i would use and reccommend and is 100% worth the drive down to the coast, speek to yarn 55325891.
