Hi Everyone,

Hey
I have a 14ft Copenhagen fibreglass runabout and I use a lowrance elite 5 combo. Charts and sounder in one. Simple to use and can do things like track back. So if you see a good bit of structure on the sounder you can scroll through it and mark it on GPS. Then turn around and follow it back unroll you are over it again.
Hope it helps.

Hey Dave
Mate I run two units in my Tinnie.
The Lowrance Elite 5 Sounder and the Elite 5M GPS, as above mate they are pretty simple to use.
However if at a later stage you would like to add things like structure scan, you need to think about that now while choosing your unit.

Most of the major manufacturers nowadays seem to have the weather proofing sorted out,not like ten years ago.
Myself i prefer Garmin,i like their operating menus.....very easy to use and their GPS technology is as good as anyone elses....
When you say open tinny.......does that mean console, tiller other?.....
Plenty of good gear out there ATM......have a look at the raymarine stuff......... it certainly looks impessive.

I like Garmin for GPS's but most are fine. This is probably because I know my way around using the Garmin Mapping system pretty well

Ok, so to add to your choices we are Humminbird fans, our 798 combo is totally exposed to the elements in our tinny & has done HEAPS of heavy rain fishing (bluddy weather) as was our previous Humminbird Wide Eye. Neither have given any trouble (the 798 is only a few months old but the previous one was years and years old...it was only a sounder, and is still working for the new owner of the old boat)

Edit: referring to WalrusLike's comment below; the 798 is fully visible in the daylight, including with polarising sunnys on.
I don't know how others compare but the Garmin sounder is fully visible in bright sunlight. Maybe they all are nowadays. But factor that in as well.
I run a raymarine A50.. Awesome unit for the price and also comes pre loaded with Silver Navionics Map Pack.
Thanks guys, the unit is going into a 4.2m tinnie on a ram mount beside the sounder,
Sorry guys I should have given that info earlier. I think what I will do to protect them is, I will get a sleeve made up out of some clears to slide over them with Velcro tabs to secure it down on the underside. I hope it does not sweat under it , bit of an idea had looking at it last night
