1St Nerang Whiting for the young fella...

    Hi All

After being couped up at home for most of his school holidays due to his Mum's Op, last week was a wipeout due to the weather. Finally the planets aligned for a trip yesterday, and as he doesn't start school again until tomorrow (yes, after 3 weeks, 'pupil free' day today!!), we headed down to the Nerang Rvr for a crack at some whiting. I wasn't too hopeful due to the time of day/year, but figured a trip is trip and if we could get a few whiting, and more importantly some more time on the water for him, then it was worthwhile.

Got IOC ramp at 3.00pm only to see the water colour was dark brown... HOPEFUL became EEEEEK! Still, we were here, we had worms, we were ready to go. Got to a spot that would keep us out of the way of all the jetskiers and traffic. This spot was my 'go to' spot during the 2nd half of summer when the usual haunts weren't producing so figured this would suffice. Wasn't long before the pressure valve was released and Jibreel had his 1st Nerang Whiting! Phew!! Actually turned out to be quite productive and by 5.30pm, we had 8 Whiting and 2 Bream. I then decided to head to another spot for the last of the incoming that always seems to produce in the hour before the top. Another hour there saw us bag another 5 including the biggest at 36cm. By this stage it was nearly 7pm and he had hit the wall big time! So we packed up and headed home, quite content with the result of our efforts.

Most importantly, he is grasping the meaning of 'smooth' and keeping the rod tip up. At one stage he asked for help (he was using a 9ft rod) and i asked him to raise the tip. His response: 'yeah Baba, this is much easier'! It was great watching him repeat the process without too much prompting throughout the session - quick learner! On a side note, very little vermin and throwbacks too - i'd say the vermin would have most likely come on the outgoing.

He certainly is Lochie! In fact he's becoming a handy little deckie too... at the ramp, hopped on the boat, turned the Sounder on, trimmed the motor down and started her up! Just think between him & Mitch in a few years time, we can just kick back and talk scheet while they do the hard yards...

Thanks Jason & Rob! It's good that he actually enjoys it without intervention/prompting. I must say i do LOVE my trips with him, but he cracks me up at times too so it's a good laugh most of the time. I'm sure he's going to have some good stories when he's old enough to post <eeeeek>...

I'd always read Ben that the Tings disappear upstream during winter and they're harder to find (in any great numbers). Last year in July, a mate and I had an awesome session one night at an extremely popular Nerang spot that somewhat debunked those theories. I partly put it down to the 'post-flood' era as the Nerang was not the same for a while after the floods - in saying that, i had avoided the Nerang in winter in previous years too, so i didn't have anything to compare it too. This trip seemed to confirm that they're still around in winter, if you know your spots. We were a little upstream, but not as far as i venture even in summer. Still, i was surprised by the number we ended up with, but i'm definitely not complaining!!
