Thread: Fire extinguisher placement

    Fire extinguisher placement

    Does anyone know if you can store the 1kg powder ones horizontally?

    I am thinking of mounting it on port side inside of gunnel beside passenger seat. So it's grab able from outside the boat as well as easy from inside or outside cabin.

    To avoid it getting in the way it would need to be a horizontal mount. That ok?

    Yep - no dramas. I've had my fire extinguishers mounted that way for over 5 years without any problems. My biggest issue is that the safety pin and plunger get corroded by salt over time...

    And give it a good shake every now and again to stop the powder settling

    I was told the same thing as crunchy said. Just give them a good shake occassionally to loosen up the powder.

    Thanks guys. Whereabouts are yours placed? It's difficult to find a spot that's usable but not in the way.

    Under the seat covered in crap I know I know...been thinking about one of those recessed boxes for the Centre Console, but difficult to track down the ones with the a door (To keep the thing from going rusty) and they are pricey too

    Away from the most likely spots where a fire can start (engine), and somewhere that it won't get buried under other shit or sprayed by salt water. If you have a cuddy then just inside the door/opening might be a good spot.

    Rubber mallet to shake- you can feel when the powder is free.

    I just spray them quickly with clear lacquer but we have to change them annually with the yacht racing rules ( cheaper than testing as we bulk buy) and we keep a 2nd spare ( they don't put out much of a fire with the average excited user) and then it goes , car boot then at home and the shed. If anyone ever sets it off inside the house unless 100% needed I'll spew as there is a co2 one there as well.

    The little powder is purely for show and complaince - I'll pick up the CO2 first if there was a fire and it is no mess depending on what is fueling the fire. .

    For the big boat we have CO2 and a port ( nozzle hole) in the engine box so we can flood it with gas without opening the hatch. Have been looking into the auto chemical ones that you leave in the engine box and if there is flame they go off. (i'll edit this when I remember their name- they are like a puck )

    Here is a clear door one and solid door for ya- what's my finders fee??

    couldn't agree more, that's why it really is ok to have it buried under a pile of crap

    Re: Fire extinguisher placement

    Spare a thought for South Australians boaties, their Fire Extinguisher requirements are;

    Minimum size for Fire Extinguishers
    • in the case of a vessel carrying not more than 115 litres of flammable liquid—0.9 kg;
    • in the case of a vessel carrying more than 115 litres but not more than 350 litres of flammable liquid—2.0 kg;
    • in the case of a vessel carrying more than 350 litres but not more than 695 litres of flammable liquid—4.5 kg;
    • in the case of a vessel carrying more than 695 litres of flammable liquid—9.0 kg.
    Was down there earlier this year with the Striper, 397 Litres of fuel .... where do you store a 4.5 kg extinguisher on a trailerboat? That's one big extinguisher. The regs state that having multiple small fire extinguishers is no substitute either.

    It might be my lack of imagination but I can't really see where I would ever use it on my boat....

    If there is a fuel leak that catches alight I will be jumping overboard. If the gas stove lit a towel or something I would throw it overboard. If the electrics started burning then I might use it... But first turn main isolator off... Maybe that's the end of it....maybe not.... so THEN I use extinguisher.

    That's the reason I want to mount it on the inside of the gunnel.... So I can reach it when on the dock or on trailer to help with other persons fire or to put out my burning bearing grease.

    Fire blankets work pretty well! cause as soon as your fire reaches flash point temp again! usually just after you have knocked the flame out and emptied the extinguisher on petrol fires well they start again! Foam would be my weapon of choice for fuel fires.

    Was on a boat that caught fire once, the flame was heading off from the carb along the fuel line towards a mighty big tank full of petrol what saved us? Quick thinking by the skipper and a wet towel......
