Phenix Salt Water 20-60lb Spiral Wrap

Just finished this Phenix Saltwater ,its a different Blank from the Phenix Hybrid .
The Hybrid blank is more of a muscle Blank and the Saltwater Blank is a thinner Dia with a more parabolic curve sort of thing with a softer action..
The pic is of the rod lifting a 10lb dead weight
On this build went for a all Black look with just one colour
    Cheers Willo

    Nice work mate
    very neat and tidy
What are the advantages in a spiral wrap ?
I can not understand why they are done and what makes them perform better than standard wrapping
Or maybe its a case of "follow the yanks "

Spiral wraps are very stable under load...You get the stablity of a spin rod in Overhead configuration ....You are not fighting reel wobble ..ie you can hold a spiral wrap under load with one hand without the reel wanting to come under the rod
There are two forms of a Spiral Wrap in building them //One is the Revolver method which takes two or more guides to transistion the line under the Blank or the Bumper method which I use and that is just using one guide in getting the line under the Blank I find this a better method as it gets the line under the blank quickly
I never really tried to push Spiral wraps ..I just build em cause they suit my style of fishing ..and cant see myself ever building a conventionl overhead for Myself
Maybe not for everybody ....But Most people I build then for dont go back to conventional overheads rods..

Would a gimble not stop the rod from twisting ?
i did a spiral build on a sabre hot rod about 20 years ago (when the yanks first started on them) and it blew up on its first fish
i have never built one since

Mate with a spiral wrap you dont need a gimbal belt
I been building them for 10 years and havent had any issues
There are heaps of disscussions on forums about Conventional verus Spiral rods..each to there own
Its all about choice....I just prefer them... and some don't

The sabre hot rods are shit to begine with mate. I think all of those blanks blew up hence why they stopped making them.

Spiral wraps have there place but as always there are pro’s and con’s to both. I’m not going to go into all the fine details of both, as I couldn’t be bothered. I will say though hat if a rod is set up correctly i.e. conventional style then you shouldn’t have an unstable rod. There are many factors involved with balancing a rod and 50% of that has to do with selecting the correct guide heights along with the reel. In the quest to build rods with the least amount of guides, guide manufactures chose to make high frames. I use the smallest reel and the lowest guides I can get away with in order to make the rod stable, its makes a massive difference. If your rod is unstable then it’s a simple case of not being built in a balanced way. Off course blank action and its power will or at least should dictate what guides should be used. You also should consider that with the onset of gel-spun lines, reels had to be beefed up along with drags. This meant a slight increase in size and weight of newer reels. Reel manufactures also seem to be in a race to achieve 100000kg of drag out of a bait caster. It really is getting beyond a joke now. I say that because rods are decreasing in weight, which means they are less strong. I built over 600 revolver or spiral wrap rods for one-company years ago in all line classes, lengths and styles. There is the “accepted “set formula” to do spiral wraps but what’s never really discussed or considered is the blanks action and its power. This plays a huge part in ultimately deciding were these guides should at least be located.
This batch of 600+ revolver rods was predominantly a decision based on what was happening on rod building forums in the USA; it had nothing to do with our style or demand in Australia. As is always the case now, America and all its ideas seem to dominate. I will say that not many of those 600+ rods were sold. With the onset of rod building forums, we now see an explosion of deer I say “fads” and “Experts”. I have been around this game long enough to have seen many ideas come and go. I’m not saying spiral wraps will die out but it come onto the seen around 15 years ago only to die a sudden death and now it’s coming back. America use to look at what Australia was doing particular in the field of all things game fishing; now we import cheap Chinese crap rebaged as something good. Some ideas taken from the States and sold as something developed here. What it should come down to is for the person to try before you buy; if you like, spiral wraps then build it if not well you get the idea.

    Willo,

Mate lovley build again, and as far as the spiral wrap goes I have not built one for myself but thats not to say I wont. I guess I would like to use one first and then make up my mind.
I understand the thinking behind the rod being stable but I dont have much trouble with the stability of my off shore rods so I guess if it aint broke it dont need fixing.

    Cheers

    Great job Willo.

Pedro, I have a couple of spiral wrapped rods including a roller unit I did just for chuckles. Next time you're heading out take one for a test drive.
They're not for every application but can be helpful.
Especially if you usually think of the gimbal AFTER the fish is flogging you.
    Cheers,
    Owen
